Happy Tails Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary

Happy Tails Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home equines from a variety of situations. About Us: CoDreLea Farm started out as a horse breeding facility in 1996.
(14)

After a few years of this, we came to realize that there were “too many horses”and many were unwanted and in need of homes or in danger of being killed. Later we came to realize the same was true for unwanted dogs and cats. So about 15 years ago, we started privately rescuing dogs, cats and the occasional horse. Many of the horses that remain here are part of the original breeding stock or a fe

w or their offspring. We began to advocate against indiscriminate breeding of horses, and for the spaying and neutering of pets. We have also been advocates for experiential learning with horses and other animals. Klara has been a certified member of EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning) organization in the past. EAGALA is a methology for doing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. CoDreLea Farm has contracted with mental health professionals to provide this service in the past. Animals, horses in particular, are great teachers utilizing metaphorical learning. In other words, our animals are very good at reflecting back to us what we need to learn. In April 2014, we incorporated Happy Tails Haven as a nonprofit corporation in South Dakota. In December 2014, we attained 501c3 nonprofit status. We now strive to make the lives of animals (horses in particular) better and to foster the animal-human bond.

We moved Chili today. It went well. She and Alex are getting along. Xena is in her stall for a couple of days and then we will introduce her as well. Xena is also blind so Alex will have double buddy duty with 2 blind mares. ❤️🐴 Thanks to those who contributed to Chili's vet bill!

All 3 of these sweet horses could use a sponsor. Please visit our website www.happytailshaven.org for more information on sponsorship.

We have an update from Chili's vet visit yesterday. The vet ran multiple tests to figure out why she went blind. They first took blood work to take a baseline Complete Blood Count, electrolytes and to possibly test for leptospirosis (a bacterial infection that can also cause blindness). They placed dye in her eyes to check for ulcers. The dye glows neon green under a black light. They checked her eye pressure for glaucoma and Uveitis. Eye pressure for glaucoma in horses is greater then 30 and less then 15 for Uveitis. Chili's eye pressure was 11 in the left eye and 8 in the right eye. The vet used a light to look in her eyes and behind the iris in both eyes is very cloudy. Her blood work came back normal and we opted not to test for leptospirosis since that blindness comes on very suddenly (like overnight) and in Chili's case, based on her symptoms, she has been going blind for quite some time now.

Sadly, the vet visit told us that Chili has chronic recurring equine uveitis resulting in cataracts. So she is totally and permanently blind. She has been low vision for quite some time and this did not happen suddenly. She will become a sanctuary horse and join the other blind mares.

She did amazing at the vet and was such a good girl! She was so patient and sweet with the vets checking her eyes.

She has simply been amazing in how well she has compensated for her chronic condition.

Chili could sure use a sponsor and the rescue could use some help with yesterday's $277 vet bill. If you care to help, the links for the PayPal and Venmo are posted below. Or if you want to send a check, our address is 14898 Elk Creek Rd Piedmont, SD 57769. Thank you.
