Last night was terrifying. 😢
Our rescue was hit hard by an unexpected hailstorm and flooding, and we’re still shaken.
It started off as a normal summer day, hot and dry. We’d heard there was a chance of storms, but we never imagined the skies would open up the way they did. Within minutes, the wind picked up, the sky turned an eerie gray-green, and then came the hail. Marble-sized at first… then larger. It pounded down on roofs, tin, tarps, buckets, everything. The noise was deafening.
Animals scattered. Pig playing in the mud, ducks floating in areas water never is and water pouring into places it never should. Within ten minutes, the property looked like a war zone. Pools overflowed. The ground couldn’t absorb the water fast enough, and flooding swept through most pens.
We are incredibly grateful that no animals were seriously hurt. But some of our pens were damaged. Tarps shredded. Panels knocked loose. Feed bins flooded. Hay and straw ruined. Sunshades torn.
It’s days like today that remind us how fragile this work is and how quickly the weather can undo everything we’ve tried to build. But it’s also days like today that show us the heart and strength of this rescue. We band together, for them. Our poor volunteers ran for cover and had to watch it all happen. There was nothing we could do but wait the storm out. Jason was stuck in the rehabilitation center, Krysta in the gift shop, Tisha in the small barn, Jamie was stuck inside while our junior volunteers ran around checking on the animals. They were soaking wet!
We are muddy, bruised, and emotionally drained however safe, and so are the animals. We’ll begin repairs tomorrow, one panel, one puddle one, one pile of soggy hay at a time. All in which was ruined.
