The to do list on a farm never ends and stops for no one!
Winter prep continues with the indoor footing getting a “lift and level” to restore the desired give and bounce, jumps and walls getting a power wash to eliminate any evidence that there was once a pigeon problem 🤣 (we won’t speak of what became of said pigeons...)

***SOLD*** McDreamy - “Malcolm”
DO NOT COMMENT! PM OR CALL ONLY!!! I don’t have time to sort through the comments section under multiple posts on Facebook I cannot guarantee you will be gotten back to you unless you message me or call his owner!

2005, 17 hand, Chestnut Warmblood/TB cross gelding.
That oh so rare combination of a Mr. Reliable type personality yet a total hunk with a drool worthy way of going, Malcolm is what a junior/ammy rider’s dreams are made of! He has been used in a small, quality dressage lesson program for the past several years but we would love to see him find his special person and long term home. He is proficient in lower level dressage, is wonderful on the trails and well seasoned over fences. He has a lovely balance and rhythm, big stride, and easy auto swap both ways. He is very suitable to be competitive in the lower hunter/eq rings. Beyond how wonderful he is under saddle, Malcolm is a very sweet guy with wonderful manners who LOVES cuddles and cookies. He is great for the vet and farrier, stands for grooming and bathes etc. He is currently in full work with a talented young professional.

Call 802-249-0856 for more information, leave a message and you’ll get a call back. High 4s, reasonably negotiable to great home.

These early fall days, few and fleeting, are the best “horse” weather we get all year here in New England. Where the sun no longer beats down and the crisp breeze, hinting at colder weather to come, keeps the bugs at bay.

The horses prefer pasture to stable and hardly need more than a fly mask, if that. I find myself turning in only long enough to feed, or even feeding some in their fields.

Riding is unconditionally pleasant, hacking out is bug-less and overheating unlikely, yet chances are it’s still warm enough to take a hose and comfortably rinse off any sweat you or your horse may work up.

So, just like that the unrelenting heat fades and stealthily creeps closer, the fierce chill of our brutal winters.

LONG overdue welcome to our newest boarder and client, Erika!!!
Her gelding, Mac joined the barn community not quite two months ago and has quickly become Cruise’s best bud as well as taken like a fish to water in to his latest endeavor as an event horse (maybe he’s been getting tips from Cruise man😉😂).
Erika’s mare, Dixie moved in on Monday and is here to explore her abilities and options. Stay tuned for updates on this girl!

We LOVE having this crew at the farm!

The idea that horses only sleep while standing up is about as based in reality as Thor throwing lightning bolts out of the clouds being where storms come from. It is a fact that they can have a light “snooze” while standing up due to their ability to lock their joints and shut down one half of their brain at a time to rest it; but they cannot reach deep sleep (REM) while in this state.

They MUST lay down to get their much needed 30 or so minutes of reparative, deep sleep every day.

Here is a collection of happily resting horses (and the occasional canine participant as well) at River House.

Interestingly you may note you will almost never see every horse in a pasture group/herd lying down. There will generally always be one standing “guard” rather near to those who are sleeping, as they are in turn, vulnerable. This comes from the innate instincts passed down from their wild ancestors.

With weather as nice as we’ve finally been having, the ponies have all started on overnight turnout! They go out in the afternoon as it starts to cool down and the bugs go away and come in in the morning before the heat wakes the bugs up again. There are sooo many mental and physical health benefits to this schedule and amount of turnout and my horses all LOVE it!! Many of them are sacked out flat when I go to get them in the morning 😂❤️ plus it makes cleaning the barn easy as pie since they’re only in for a handful of hours during the day 😉. A dream of mine is to someday live in a place where the climate makes this approach is possible all year round (the winter ruins it here in New England).
