It’s certainly been an emotional couple of weeks around here. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to connect with so many of the wonderful animal lovers in Pierre and work with your awesome dogs.

Each client taught me something valuable, each owner-dog pair made me a better trainer. Each challenge we overcame together brought a human closer to their goals with their dog whether it was to overcome fear and reactivity, build up a solid foundation in obedience or just learn some fun tricks. Each session helped someone understand the undeniable value in using positive reinforcement and the importance of allowing dogs to be dogs in the safest way possible.

Closing out my chapter in Pierre was not an easy decision, but we sure are excited for what’s next. Thank you everyone who was a part of my growth and thank you so much for letting me be a part of yours. I have grown to love each of your dogs and will miss every last one! 💙🐾

As many of you know, Pierre has been such an important part of my journey as a dog trainer, helping countless dogs and owners navigate their relationships with more confidence and peace. It’s with a heavy heart but also a sense of excitement for what lies ahead that I announce I’m embarking on new adventures and moving away.

I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to work with so many amazing clients and I can’t wait to take everything I’ve learned here to grow and build something special in my new destination.

With that being said, things are moving pretty quickly and we will be out of here at the end of September. I am running a moving special to help anybody who wants to get a couple sessions with a professional trainer in and learn how to help your dog lead a more fulfilling life. I will not be taking anymore new clients after Monday, September 9th, so if you are interested the time to act is now.
Please contact me through this post or the number and email on the picture.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my wonderful time here in Pierre🐾💙

Congratulations to last nights Bark, Bond and Basics graduates!! 🎓

Dean- He went almost the entire last class without barking at the other dogs. That was his mom’s goal!👏
Boone- He learned all the basic commands and started the process of learning to be calm in stimulating environments!👏
Rowdi- She showed impressive comprehension of the obedience commands and made a lot of progress on proper leash skills!👏
Tuffy- He tuned up some obedience commands and started learning how to stop jumping on approaching people. He showed major growth in this behavior last night!👏

This was such an awesome group of dogs and handlers. Thank you for choosing Mutts & Manners to guide you in your training journey!🐾💙🤩

Meet Sunka!
He’s my first in-home board and train client. Sunka has quite the history with resource guarding, so he’s mine for the week so we can work on this behavior. Today is our first full day together and he is already showing less guarding behavior around his food and toys and learning quickly that I’m not here to take from him, but to GIVE!

Stay tuned this week for some video updates and helpful tips if this is something your dog struggles with as well 🐾💙

What’s my favorite part about what I do?

The hope I see in a clients eyes when they see that their dog is absolutely capable of the very thing they’ve been struggling with. The understanding that dawns on them while I explain what’s going on in their dogs head. The excitement they feel when they see their fuzzy family member succeeding in a situation they didn’t understand before. The gratitude I see in each person that comes to me and trusts me to guide them and their dog to success.
Everyday I get to help my clients, dog and human, experience hope that they will make it and are just a few steps away from a fulfilling life together. I get to bond with the most amazing dogs and insure that they will stay with their families where they belong and not end up in one of the overflowing shelters struggling to save every dog they can. I also get the amazing opportunity to change the lives of those very shelter dogs and guide them in their training to be more appealing to adopters. I love everything about what I do and all the fantastic people and dogs I get to help.

Many days in this field are challenging, but everyday is worth it. 🐾💙

Chili is nearly 4 months old and is beginning to show some real excitement about leaving the house and being in public. Today we are working on engagement among distractions, and we’re starting in our own front yard. Simultaneously we are working on Chili being neutral when people walk by (he wants to say hello to everyone) to begin building a foundation for a well mannered dog who has the self control to ignore the urge to give in to these impulses.
Take your dog out to a nice shady spot and allow them to settle in and watch the world go by. Rewarding your dog for calm behavior is more valuable than you know!
PS- inside out ears, it’s his new thing 💙🐾

This is Rogue, and we’ve been working together since February. Her grandma Becky contacted me with a reactive dog who pulled on the leash and didn’t mind her manners much. So our goal was clear, tune Rogue up and get her to a point where her family could enjoy a public outing with her. Once her papa Aiden decided to move to an apartment in Sioux Falls, our goals shifted to getting her ready for apartment living in close quarters with other dogs. I’m so excited to say that after 4 months of hard work, Rogue has moved in with her dad and is doing amazing.

Here’s an update from him:
“Rogue is doing great with apartment living. She even made a new doggy friend today with her neighbor. She is minding on the leash and enjoys laying in the sunshine on “her” bed. She still barks at dogs she sees through the window but we can redirect her a lot easier than we could a few months ago.”

It’s a bitter sweet moment when it’s time for my clients to graduate to the next phase and I have to hand their training completely over to their owners. I’m so happy for Rogue and her dad, and can’t give enough credit to Becky for all the work she put in with raising sweet Rogue and sticking to the training plan even when it was difficult. Happy life to you Rogue and Aiden, thank you for letting me be a part of your journey💙🥹🐾

Kylo is a PAWS dog. He showed up a year ago and has managed to capture ALL of our hearts. Kylo knows quite a few basic commands like sit, come, leave it, drop it, and we are working on stay. He’s an excellent leash walker and has made so much progress learning how to interact with the world outside of the shelter. He loves tug AND fetch AND water AND car rides. He really is the whole package! 💙🐾

URGENT!
Loki is looking for help!
Loki is an 18 month old Pitbull/Husky mix. His current family is unable to provide him the training and socializing he needs at this time. I need someone who can offer Loki a loving home while I work on his training. Ideally an individual who has some extra time to give him, no kids or no pets at this time. Whether it’s a foster or a permanent home, his training will be completely free.
Loki has til the end of July to find placement or they will make the hard decision to euthanize. Please message me with any questions!

Today was Chili’s first leashed up outing with Mia and I. It went about as well as you’d expect a young puppies first walk to go!

There was pulling, stopping, jumping, leash biting, and of course he got tangled a few times. All behaviors which should be expected when you’re leash training your new puppy.
Often times, many of us dog owners fail our dogs by expecting too much too soon. It’s important to remember that puppies are coming into our world with fresh, curious eyes, and there are many things they will struggle to understand! The leash is a BIG ONE.
Chili wanted to be free to roam and explore this new world at his own pace, but of course we have to keep our dogs safe so the leash isn’t an option when you’re out in public. I allowed Chili to sniff, I allowed him a little bit of pulling, I allowed him to observe the cars driving by and the people in their yards without scolding him to continue on the walk.
We kept the walk short and the expectations for perfection low, and by the end of it both my babies were tired and happy! Good leash skills will come with these next few months, but let’s remember to allow our puppies to enjoy puppyhood and have fun while experiencing our human world 🌎 🐾
