Last weekend PAWS did one of the coolest things I think we have ever done! It's a long story - but i promise it will be worth it โค.
Our main focus is, and always has been, helping animals in Hughes and Stanley counties. But, when we can, and when our resources allow, we help wherever we can to save animals who have been wronged by their people.
We saw a need to help a long-time PAWS supporter, now living in Mississippi, who had taken on 10 dogs (2 adults and 8 puppies) from a terrible neglect and hoarding case. With so many animals displaced from the hurricane, resources in the south are stretched pretty thin. We told her we could take 2 puppies - if we could get them here. Wait - that's 1338 miles! How do we do that?
Well, when Jen puts her mind to something it usually happens!
Cue a request to an amazing organization: Pilot N Paws!
Within hours two pilots, who fly rescues in their own private planes out of the sheer kindness of their hearts, had stepped up to fly segments of that long trip. But... there was an overnight layover in Iowa City between the 2 pilots. What do we do? Google rescues in Iowa City! We found a family willing to pick up these 2 beauties, house them overnight, and return them to the airport. After another flight from Iowa City, they were picked up in Sioux Falls and taken to meet their ground transport to Pierre. Once here, they were welcomed to the PAWS family, settled into a suite, and have quickly become staff and volunteer favorites! They are the sweetest, most cuddly, gorgeous girls!
Welcome to the wonderful world of rescue sweet Allie and Rose. We got you!
Meet Luca!
This handsome guy is Luca, a 5 year old male pitbull.
In addition to his good looks, Luca is extremely friendly and gentle, with good manners. He loves kids, but can be selective of his dog friends and needs to be in a home with no cats. We think he would make an excellent adventure buddy, as he loves to run, walk and hike and does excellent on the leash.
We are located in Pierre, SD. You can meet all of our available animals during open hours on Saturdays from 11-1 pm. Otherwise, visit our website for information on prices, adoption applications, etc. www.pierrepaws.com

Hey PAWS fans-read on for some EXCITING news!!
Over the past few years, we have seen a steadily increasing number of animals coming into our care. To help keep up with this demand and continue to be in a position to help as MANY dogs & cats as we can, we need to entertain the idea of growth outside of our current 4 walls.
So here's where the exciting part comes in: we found a place that will let us do that!!
A large parcel of land and a big, empty building within a very short walking distance of our current shelter has come up for auction. We have great visions of utilizing this building as our Canine Enrichment Center and it will allow us a huge indoor space to train and work out those "kennel crazies" during inclement weather. Additionally, it will house necessary extra kennel space for any dogs needing isolation precautions such as the mange or parvo puppies that we often times encounter. Or remember the very, very pregnant mama dog recently that gave birth to her puppies at the pound? Wouldn't it have been nice for her to have a quiet, private place instead? Or even dogs that we simply don't have the kennel space for currently, this would give us that bit of extra wiggle room that will allow us to continue helping dogs.
And with the additional land this property comes with, we have the ability to grow as needed far into the future. If you have visited our Shelter, you will see that not only are we full, full, full!-we are also quite landlocked!
Because this is a (no-reserve) auction, we have no idea what the property will sell for. This makes planning and budgeting impossible. What we do know though is that we want to be prepared with as much funding as we can โ in the form of pledges โ prior to the auction. This will give us an idea of what our max bid could be and what we could afford to finance.
Would you be willing to help us achieve this dream by making a โpre-donationโ? We are currently seeking donations in the form of pledges to see just e
We just word of a litter of 6 day old kittens who's momma quit feeding them ๐. We do do not have the resources for a neonatal litter, but I have a very experienced contact in Yankton.
Is anyone heading anywhere near that direction that can help us with transport? This is of utmost urgency!
Meet Kylo!!
Hi world! I'm Kylo, and I really want to be your friend! I've been at the shelter for nearly a year, and I'm ready for my family to come and get me out. I love car rides, and I insist I am a front seat dog. I had my first experience at the river recently, and I really like it there too! My favorite game is tug and I'll do anything for a yummy treat or a belly rub. Everyone says they love to walk me on the leash because I do such a good job. My family at the shelter loves me and says I'm a really good boy, and someone will come along who needs me to be their adventure buddy soon. I haven't seen much of the world, but I really love what I've had the chance to see so far. I need someone to teach me how to properly ask for attention, and interact with other dogs. I have a little fixation issue, but I'm already learning the value in positive engagement with my handler. My friend Gabby teaches me new things all the time, and she said she will teach you too! Whoever you are, I hope you will take me on lots of walks and give me lots of attention to keep me out of trouble. I can't wait to meet you ๐
