To help our clients as much as possible regarding the recent reports of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD), we will keep updated on our page.

Please understand, that there is no formal infectious disease surveillance program for canine diseases and pathogens. This means that a lot of the data that is needed to answer the questions every pet owner has is not available.

Media reports and anecdotal information are filling this void. It is impossible to know how much of the information from these sources is correct. We are currently cautious but not excessively worried about this problem in our patient population at this time.

While there is a concern that there may be a more problematic respiratory disease that is yet to be identified it is important to note that, in our opinion, there is not an overall increase in the prevalence of respiratory cases in this area at this timeā€“in other words, there is not an ā€œoutbreakā€ spreading around.

A recent article that is a good review of current thoughts:

Canine Respiratory Disease Update

With all of the news outlets recently talking about an unknown Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease that is popping up in multiple US states, we wanted to be sure to reach out to all of our clients with the information we have available at this time.
As of now, what we know is that there are four states that are investigating reports of a severe respiratory disease in dogs. (Colorado, Oregon, New Hampshire and Florida). These cases are resulting in severe, acute pneumonia that is not responsive to antibiotics. There is a chronic cough that can last up to 6 weeks despite treatment.
These cases have not yet been linked to any known canine respiratory disease and the causative agent has not been identified.

We do not know:
Whether or not these cases are linked
How contagious the disease is
How often it results in clinical illness
If or when we will see it here in Maryland.

Recommendations:
Do not panic, despite the news reports we do not have any reason to think that the world is any more dangerous than it was before
Highest risk for ANY infectious respiratory disease should be avoided or at least use caution when visiting.
If your pet is showing any signs of respiratory illness, do not expose them to other dogs and reach out to us for evaluation and further treatment recommendations.
If you visit these environments regularly, we do recommend being sure that vaccination status is current for any disease that we are able to vaccinate for.

Again, the closest this has come to us thus far is in the North East, but with holidays and travel, it always has the chance to find itā€™s way here.
We hope that this helps, and as always, we will be updating you as we obtain any new information.

Thank you,
Your Team at PIkesville Animal Hospital.
