New policy’s going forward: the only processing that I will be accepting will be if it has Taxidermy work on it also. This includes Euro or shoulder mounts. And this will also be limited availability so always call or message before you bring anything. These changes are necessary in order for me to focus on current and future Taxidermy clients needs. This will be for all hunting season even bow season. And I will not be taking any processing in the coming year till all previous Taxidermy orders are completed. Ideally this will help in if you harvest a trophy I’ll have room and time to be available to process and take care of your Taxidermy needs in one stop. I do appreciate everyone that has ever used my services. And hope and pray the best for you and your family. One other policy change year round. I will not be accepting anything or have my phone turned on Sundays till after 2pm.

This post is to help with all around quality of your harvest/Mount. Say we have everything field dressed correctly and want the animal mounted. Best case scenario it’s a cold day,dry out and can get hung up quickly to cool down. If is a mount you still want to get it to who ever you use or caped and put in the freezer if not ready to get mounted yet. Some things that go wrong if you process yourself and your worried about getting the meat in the freezer and the hide is laying on the ground with leaves and dirt on it. This brings the possibility of introducing bacteria. Anytime the hide is over 40 degrees bacteria grows quickly especially if its also wet. Bacteria will also grow just from not being cool enough. And when there gets to be enough on your hide it starts breaking down. Then once there’s enough you could get a hot spot on your hide/mount or even worse total slippage. And one this happens there’s nothing anyone could do to fix this. So make sure to keep your hide as dry as possible and cold if putting on ice be sure your hide is in a plastic bag to keep from getting wet. Either get it to your Taxidermist. And if you plan on storing in your freezer. Make sure it’s dry and put in multiple plastic garbage bags making sure everything is well covered. To ensure to prevent freezer burn which is basically freeze drying and ruining your mount. So always leave ample hide especially in the brisket area and keep cold, dry or frozen. And if you have any questions about what to do just give me a call. I hope this helps someone.

I wanted to do a post to help people with caping of there deer this is how I do it. And if you use another Taxidermist reach out to them to ask how they prefer it. Also whether you use me for processing or not if you are using my Taxidermy Services I will skin and quarter while caping out. For no charge. But if you use me for processing and not Taxidermy. There will be a caping fee if done. But if you decide to Cape your own look at my picture to see where to cut at. Basically go completely around the deer at the sternum bone. And up the back of the front legs connecting to where the sternum bone is. This is plenty for a shoulder mount or pedestal. The biggest problem area I see for people is they leave all the back hide but cut out there brisket area. And that is a very critical area to have a great mount. If it’s your first time to need to have one caped. And don’t feel comfortable. Just bring to me if you’re using my services and I’ll be happy to show you how. Or call me and I can talk you through it.

I’ve been wanting to explain how I field dress my game when I’m Blessed to be able to get any. This will be a long post and strictly just my opinion from my experience of processing over the years. A lot of you have learned from another hunting buddy or maybe a hunting show. And we all end up with some different results and that’s ok. And yes the field dressing is not the most favorite part of our hunts but one of the most important. First some facts a normal whitetails core temperature will be around 101 to 104 degrees. So when we harvest an animal it becomes a hot well insulated vessel. Thus the importance to start the cooling process. And venison are way more forgiving then Elk as far as spoilage goes. Both are very insulated and need the inners removed in a timely manner. Also even if your game doesn’t spoil on you from leaving them in to long you still will have a lesser quality meat due to the heat and digestive system secretion’s leaching into the outer tissues/meat. So this is how I recommend to do it and I will explain why. You do want to get everything you can out especially the digestive system all the way back. But there no need to chop all around on it because it may help it cool but if causes it to become dirty you will still lose some of your harvest for no reason. When we try to split the pelvic bone most end up messing up most of there hams and do more damage than good. Yes on some of the shows they do that cause they are deep in the woods. Here in eastern Kentucky they are dollar mart’s with ice everywhere and that would be far better than splitting in the woods. Ok here’s my way of doing it!
First after Harvest carry a piece of string something biodegradable and go to the back of the animal and cut around the a**s and other parts if it’s a Doe. Guide your knife around the inside pelvis bone to free everything up. Now use the string to tie everything off. Next roll it over on its back and start at the sternum bone to split back towards the pelvis. Being careful not to cut any of the internal organs or yourself. Then when everything is pulled out there will be nothing left from the digestive system to dirty or contaminate the animal. If it’s a doe you can go further towards the chest but if it’s a possibility you might want to mount it try not to go past the sternum to clean everything out. Try to leave as much skin on the pelvic area to prevent contaminants from touching your meat. And with this method there will still be airflow through the pelvic bone. And if you are going to be a while before processing throw some ice in to cool even faster. Not always necessary but added insurance . So whether you process your own game or bring to a processor like me. We go through a lot of money and work for our harvest. Get the most you can out of it. If you have read all this and still have questions feel free to call me and I’ll be happy to help you.
