Declawing is the surgical amputation of the last joints of a catโs toes, similar to cutting a personโs finger off at the last knuckle, closest to the fingertip. It can mean as many as 18 amputations for a cat. When the bones are cut, tendons, nerves, and ligaments in each paw are also severed, causing horrible pain. It is an elective surgery that causes permanent damage and is traumatic and stressful to cats.
At the Animal Wellness Center, we believe in preserving the well-being and natural behaviors of our feline friends. That's why we choose not to declaw cats. Declawing, once deemed a routine procedure, is now recognized as unnecessary and inhumane. Many countries worldwide have banned this practice due to its perceived cruelty. In the United States, attitudes are evolving, guided by our love for animals and a commitment to their welfare. By advocating for declawing bans, we aim to ensure that all cats can enjoy their lives with their claws intact. Let's work together to make declawing a practice consigned to the past.
