Hot shoeing 🔥

After the foot has been trimmed, rasped, and is ready for the new shoe, it is heated in the forge and placed briefly on the hoof to sear the path where it will lie.

This creates a smooth surface to seal the cut horn tubules. Hot shoeing even kills any potentially problematic bacteria or fungus.

I made these straight bar shoes with a rolled toe to ease breakover. ⚒️

Breakover is the period in a horses step when the heal begins to lift as the horse moves forward.

Easing breakover can improve the overall stride to get the horse loading flat/heel-first so that well-connected walls can grow.

Using my baldor grinder to debur and finalize the shape of a shoe.

Helped a friend make this mushroom shoe for a Standard bred race horse.

Mushroom shoes work by floating the heel and transferring the weight from heel to the frog to reduce heel pain.

These shoes are good for horses with sore heels, heel abscesses or cracks.

This is Alan’s second winter in a row going barefoot!

Going barefoot during the winter can provide a break for the hooves. It also gives the horse natural traction on the ice and snow.

Some horses do not tolerate the hard winter ground and become tender-footed.

Farrier using Hoof Knife

Tools of the Trade: Hoof Knife A hoof knife is an essential tool for trimming a horses hoof. It is used for exfoliating loose and dried sole or ragged frog. The frog is the triangular part at the bottom of the hoof. It acts as a shock absorber and helps to pump blood up the horses’s leg. Trimming away loose frog allows me to inspect the area to make sure there aren’t any infections present. If there are, I am able to remove the infected tissue. It also allows me to see how much hoof I am able to trim. In the video you see me pressing on the sole, I do that in order to gauge how close I am to the sensitive tissue. The closer I am to it the soft it will feel since there is less sole. Direct message me if you have any questions or are interested in scheduling a hoof trim for your horse!
