These are great tips for young horses and actually some of the foundational work I’m doing with my OTTB as he matures more before going into harder work.

5 things you can do with young horses before you start them undersaddle, beyond basic care & handling:

1️⃣Take them for hikes! In-hand exploration is a great way to build confidence, safe leading skills, and prepare your young horse for future trail rides. Plus, low intensity exercise such as this physically supports their growing bodies

2️⃣Haul them out to new environments. Don't wait until your horse is undersaddle and ready to go to a show before you start exposing them to trailer loading & travel. Develop positive associations with the trailer & take them with a friend on short trips to build positive associations in new places!

3️⃣Build confidence over obstacles on the ground! Walking over tarps, logs, stepping up onto pedestals, and crossing water are all excellent ways to increase balance, fitness, & proprioception while preparing your horse to do these things undersaddle in time.

4️⃣Play soundtracks for your horse! Set up your speaker, and systematically get them accustomed to a cheering crowd, fireworks, loud music - any sound that they might hear out & about in the world.

5️⃣Teach them fun tricks - not everything that you train your horse has to be serious, or in preparation of working undersaddle. Take the time to enjoy your young horse while they're in this phase of life. Teach them to smile, play with a ball, fetch, scent track...be creative & have fun!

P.S. Working on these things are beneficial for horses of ALL ages, not just young horses!
