Do you understand the importance of the heels on a horse?

The heel should be the first part of the hoof to land on the the ground when taking a step. This contributes to the sensory input for not only normal hoof growth and shape, but also motor output. Hoof growth is stimulated in areas of the foot that receive that sensory input. If the toe lands first, more toe growth will be stimulated. The heel landing first is also important in preventing joint damage to the rest of the feet and legs. It helps absorb shock and encourage proper gait mechanics.

Overall, it is extremely important to pay attention to the heel growth and angles on a horse. Hire a farrier who pays attention to details like this to ensure your horse is receiving the best hoof care.
