SPH also trains prospects for reining, ranch riding, and timed events. We offer horsemanship instruction that is effective and easy to understand for horsemen of all skill levels. In addition, we also produce and sell ho

rses that are well trained, safe, and dependable. Hannah Schultz has been dedicated to being the best horseman she could be from an early age. This passion for knowledge has led her to work with some of the top trainers in the United States, in both the clinician and performance horse fields. Having the experience in BOTH industries has shaped Hannah’s training philosophy and teaching style, culminating in a program that gives you the best of both worlds: high level performance, but achieved through communication that the horse can understand. The key behind Hannah’s philosophy in both training horses and teaching people is CUSTOMIZATION. Customizing a horse’s training program to fit his future career yields far better results than forcing him into a cookie-cutter training regimen. People are no different – when working with riders, Hannah tailors the program to your experience, goals, discipline and weaknesses. Schultz Performance Horsemanship looks forward to helping you toward your horsemanship goals! Follow along for updates, training tips, videos, and inspiration!

🐴 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 📝

𝟏. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭, 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭.
Begin and end your riding sessions with a relaxing warm up and cool down to help your horse develop calm habits and a positive association with you and the training.

𝟐. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐟 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝.
Have a general plan and goals for your ride to give your horse clear direction and purpose, but stay flexible and adjust as needed based on your horse’s behavior, mental state, or external conditions.

𝟑. 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥.
Instead of getting carried away chasing perfection in one session, focus instead on teaching your horse in short, consistent increments.

𝟒. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐨.
Teach a concept, and then refine it as the horse understands. Getting too picky before your horse understands the concept can cause confusion, frustration or anxiety

𝟓. 𝐁𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝.
When and where you rest and reward your horse matters - it shapes habits, behavior and so much more.

𝟔. 𝐆𝐨 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝.
If your horse is really struggling to learn something new or execute a maneuver, odds are there is a hole somewhere in your foundation. Go back to basics and rebuild if needed.

𝟕. 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮.
A horse only has so much energy mentally and physically - don’t exhaust your horse to the point where he can’t do what you are asking or fry his mind with too much information.

𝟖. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧.
Being consistent in your expectations, cues, and frequency of your training sessions is a MUST. It is unrealistic to expect consistency from your horse if you are not being consistent in how you are working with him.

𝟗. 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
Emotion has no place in training horses - it influences your energy, body language, and communication. Corrections and boundaries should come from a place of calm and emotional stability.

𝟏𝟎. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭.
Kind of like putting quarters in a piggy bank, each training session slowly adds up, but it takes time to see big results - and that is perfectly normal.

As humans, it is so easy and natural for us to make statements, create excuses, and not take ownership. Shifting our perspective allows us to approach training with a whole different mentality - and get better results.✨

𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧.

Be ok with not doing something correctly the first day you learn it.

Accept that you are going to look like an idiot while you try to figure it out.

You are going to make mistakes, struggle, fail, and flat out suck at something that you don’t know how to do yet.

It isn’t going to be fun for a while - it’s going to be uncomfortable, frustrating, discouraging, and overwhelming.

Don’t apologize for being ignorant or messing up when you are making the effort to learn.

Give yourself the grace to not be good at it, but work on it anyway. Allow yourself time to figure it out. Don’t try to make it happen - let it happen.

While a horse is learning new information and forming habits, they are also associating those things with a certain feeling or mental state. With every interaction, your horse is learning to associate you, your training, and their environment in either a 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 or 𝐍𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄 light.

Look at it this way:
Imagine you are learning something new, and you have a coach that is clear, patient, consistent, and encouraging, yet holds you accountable. While you will struggle to learn initially just like anyone would, you will be learning in a calm, stable environment, and gain confidence and validation during the process. In the end, you will learn the information AND have a confident and positive mindset to go with it.

Now imagine that same scenario, except your coach is confusing, has a short fuse, is inconsistent, belittles you, and constantly puts you in situations that you are not equipped for, causing you to fail over and over. You will eventually learn, but you will struggle significantly more, and have anxiety, negativity, stress, and maybe even some irritation or thoughts of quitting. In the end you have learned the same information, but now you have baggage attached to it because of how you were taught.

It’s exactly the same for horses. As a trainer, one of the most difficult things to remedy is a horse that has learned something, but has negative association or a negative mindset attached to it.

All this being said, no one, horse or human, learns perfectly. It is very normal for a horse to experience a range of negative emotions in the training process at times: confusion anxiety, tension, reactiveness, irritation, discomfort etc. The key is making sure that your preesentation of new concepts to the horse makes his learning simple and rapidly replaces those emotions with lasting positive ones. ✨
