Did you know that compression of the brachial plexus can create unexplained forelimb lameness!?

Compression between the scapula and the ribs has been considered as the most common cause of injury to the brachial plexus. This can cause unexplained lameness and stumbling.

There becomes a cause and effect cycle that occurs as these horses present with neurogenic atrophy of the thoracic muscles. The lack of muscle development means a loss of cushioning between the scapula, brachial plexus and rib, predisposing to more compression.

Studies have outlined that this diagnosis is rare, however appreciate this could be due to underdiagnosis as neurological issues are difficult to assess with screening modalities, some may have conservative management, go without further investigation, or be euthanized because of a belief of poor prognosis or a suspicion of other severe conditions such as limb fracture.

So, it is possible that many horses with milder compression of the brachial plexus could be dealing with milder discomforts and sub clinical lameness'.

Join myself and Celeste-Leilani Lazaris, a pioneer of the recognition and treatment of this pathology in an upcoming webinar where we also go into the fluid, interconnected relationship with posture and hoof balance.

What are the implications of mismatched front feet?

Many horses have high/low front feet, where one foot has a steeper angle then it’s opposite.
But do we realise how much effect this can have on the entire musculoskeletal system!?

We can have different types of high/low.
A boxy foot and an ideal foot.
An ideal foot and a flat foot.
A flat foot and a boxy foot.
Studies have shown that that amount of difference in angle between the two is proportional to the effects on the horses biomechanics.

These horses may require much more regular physiotherapy or chiropractic due to the profound compensations which are akin to sub clinical unilateral lameness. Especially in the back as Gomez Alvarez et al. (2007) measured the majority of compensations for lameness are seen in the spine.

This is a great example of how the hoof and the horse are inextricably linked as the hoof conformation is created by physiological influences. Below is a comprehensive graphic of the effects of high/low.

UNDERSTANDING HOOF ABSCESSES

The scenario is all too familiar for many horse owners: yesterday your horse was sound, but today you find him three-legged lame, with no apparent injury. What could have happened? Well, you say, my horse is likely working on a foot abscess.
But what does that actually mean?

Although most commonly seen during the wet winter and spring months, hoof abscesses can plague horses year-round and usually occur when debris and bacteria enter the foot through hoof cracks and wounds, even horseshoeing holes. The bacteria then get trapped between the sensitive laminae (the tissue layer that bonds the hoof capsule to the coffin bone) and the hoof wall or sole and create pus; the pus builds up over the course of time and puts pressure behind the hoof wall or sole, until it causes the sudden onset of acute lameness when the pain finally becomes too great.
The diagram below shows a simplified view of the equine hoof to help you visualize the structures involved in this process.

Hoof abscesses can mimic other more serious diseases or injuries, so involving your veterinarian early on in the diagnosis and prompt treatment of this condition is always a good idea. Some abscesses will be uncomplicated and rupture on their own like a large pimple at the coronary band or heel bulbs; other abscesses, however, could require radiographs and will need to be surgically drained.

Laminitis is an ugly word to most horse people and it has robbed countless horses of their athletic talent, comfort, and even their lives. While it is one of the most common diseases in equines, it received a major uptick in awareness and ultimately research funding during and since the plight of 20...

"This horse is 3 out of 5 lame."
You've probably heard this a million times. But do you ACTUALLY know what a person is talking about if they use this expression to describe lameness in horses?

Because each horse has unique performance characteristics, evaluating lameness can be challenging; lameness may appear as a barely noticeable shortening of the stride, or the condition may be so severe that the horse will not bear weight on the affected limb. With such extremes possible, a lameness grading system has been developed by the AAEP to aid both communication and record-keeping. The graphic below illustrates the zero-to-five AAEP lameness scale, with zero being no perceptible lameness, and five being most extreme.

When lameness occurs or is suspected, you should contact your veterinarian promptly. An early examination can save you time, money and frustration by diagnosing and treating the problem immediately, possibly preventing further damage. Read more about lameness in horses on our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/lameness-exams-evaluating-lame-horse, and consult your veterinarian to learn how you can become a better observer and steward for your equine friend!

Good to Know ... !!

Imbalanced Rider, Imbalanced Horse

- The rider’s TIPPED-FORWARD position places his weight in front of the horse’s center of balance, pushing him onto his forehand and making it difficult for him to balance himself. The rider’s seat bones are not in contact; the legs move back and forth. The rider is in front of the horse’s motion.
- The CHAIR SEAT places the rider’s weight on the back of the saddle and behind the motion of the horse. The seat bones are in a constant driving position. This is uncomfortable for the horse, which then hollows its back and raises it’s head. It cannot relax or round its back or move freely forward on the aids. Again, effectiveness of the rider’s seat and legs is lost.
- The rider MUST be BALANCED LATERALLY, as well. Some riders sit unevenly, collapsed through the waist, pushing the hips to one side and tilting the shoulders to compensate. Watch the rider from behind to check for straightness. The horse cannot be straight if its rider is crooked.

Electro-Acuscope therapy

The Electro Acuscope is an FDA approved instrument that uses micro-current to monitor and treat cells and body tissue. It is specifically calibrated for equine use.

A few of the results you would see are improved general well being, optimal performance, faster healing from injuries (up to 50% accelerated recovery rate), pain management for chronic conditions and soft tissue damage. As well as the all important Preventative maintenance!

Examples of the conditions this therapy can help with: Body Soreness Soft Tissue injuries: muscles, tendons and ligaments Arthritic conditions Joint Inflammation and Pain

While Electro Acuscope therapy compliments traditional veterinary procedures it does not replace proper veterinary diagnosis and treatment.
