While this comes with mixed emotions (since she won’t be able to compete in our hunt test this weekend) Sweet Pea came into heat this week, so we are excited to open up the 2025 waitlist for her second and likely final litter. We feel strongly about not overbreeding our females and allowing them to do what they love - which is to train, trial, guide, and hunt.

This will be a repeat breeding of our field bred Golden Retrievers, Sweet Pea and Toby, during her next heat cycle in about 6 months. Puppies should be ready to go home summer 2025.

‼️A deposit, phone call(s), and application WILL BE REQUIRED to join the waitlist‼️ We care deeply about the match between family and puppy being a good fit, so we need to talk to you on the phone before we can move forward with putting you on any list. 💥You will not be able to “pick out” your puppy 💥 please keep reading for more on that.

Puppies will be raised with the puppy culture and puppy brain curriculums, ENS, ESI, and Volhard aptitude testing (along with our careful observations) to place the puppies in their best fit home. We are getting Toby and Sweet Pea’s annual eyes rechecked and then they will have OFA CHIC numbers.

We kept a male and a female from this pairing and we are super happy with them, as is everyone else who has a puppy from this litter.

Both dogs are excellent trialing and hunting companions, have amazing prey drive, are eager to train and are guide dogs for upland hunting. These dogs are our beloved family pets and they both have wonderful off switches at home.

Sweet Pea (lovingly nicknamed The Honey Badger) has her Seasoned title and one pass towards her Finished title. She absolutely loves tackling down geese. Toby (affectionately nicknamed The Swamp Pony) has his Seasoned title and two passes towards his Finished title. He is a natural hunter and excels in the thickest of swampiest conditions.

A couple weeks ago our focus was on Theo and Tulip, but I didn’t want too much time to go by without celebrating Ted, Toby and Sweet Pea on getting finished passes at Southern MI’s hunt test. This makes 1/4 for Sweet Pea and 2/4 for Toby.

Theo (9) competed in his first HRC Hunt Test this weekend running Tulip (1) at Southern Michigan Hunting Retriever Club, and we couldn’t be more proud of him. Exemplifying perseverance, patience and composure, Theo was able to take home two Started passes, completing Tulip’s Started title. Way to go Theo!! Thank you to everyone who cheered him on and encouraged him - I think it’s safe to say he’s hooked - he plans to train her for Seasoned next.

Ted also ran Toby and Sweet Pea in Finished and brought home one pass for each of them on Saturday. We are very proud of everyone!!

Thank you to all of the members at Southern MI HRC for putting on such a great test, everyone who worked the test, and the judges. We had a great time.

Theo has only been training with Tulip for a month, so a very special thank you to everyone who has contributed to Theo’s training, especially his father Ted, and Brent, and to Robert and Jim for teaching Ted so he can pass on the training to Theo. And thank you to everyone for the amazing pictures and videos! Nancy, Gary and Laura! ♥️♥️♥️ It was so special to have our breeders, Nancy and Dan there from Headwater's Retrievers watch Theo and Tulip run their final set and get their title. What a great weekend!

We get a lot of questions about what HRC, The Hunting Retriever Club, is. If you would like to learn more, here is a video about the Started Hunting Retriever Test, which is the beginning level of the HRC hunt test program. If you look closely you may even notice Ted, Sweet Pea (water), and Toby (land) 😉

POV: you’re in that sweet spot between being a puppy dog and a grown up dog, so you get treats for training with the puppies still but you also get complete freedom in the house now: life is good.

“The data examined the health records of 759 male Goldens, and it found that a significant number of dogs neutered before 12 months old developed hip dysplasia as adults. The results indicated that early neutering had an adverse effect on young dogs’ growth plates and joints, essentially preventing their proper formation.”

New research has redefined the best age to spay/neuter popular dog breeds. Delaying the procedure can prevent joint disorders and certain cancers.
