Hi all! In my day to day work over the last several years, I’ve been seeing a very concerning trend. A horse would be diagnosed with laminitis and be prescribed soft ride boots. I have seen them help a lot of horses and am a strong believer in this strategy for a number of reasons, and they have saved a lot of lives! However, to my knowledge, and to the knowledge of all the vets I have worked with, there was no local source that carried them. Therefore, the owners would have to contact the company, figure out sizing, and either spend hundreds of dollars on overnight priority shipping or wait days or even a week before they arrived, and hopefully, they actually fit when they did arrive! The problem is, Laminitis is a dynamic disease and that time waiting could mean the difference between a full recovery and permanent disability or even death! Well, I decided I had to do something about that. So, I am excited to announce that I now carry a large (and expanding inventory) of soft ride boots as well as the therapeutic laminitic gel inserts! Now it is possible for your horse to get the relief they need in a matter of hours! Emergency services are offered where I can bring the boots to your horse, size them, and adjust them to custom fit. Or, if you know the size, they can easily be picked up at Martin Thoroughbreds in Pine Bush, NY. And, of course, if you did get the wrong size, they’ll be easy to exchange to the correct ones.

Please understand, that not every size will be available all the time, but I will try to have the most common sizes in stock. And please, if you need to come to the farm to buy a pair, please get a hold of either myself or Cheyenne so we can be sure that we have the size you need with someone who can help you.

My hope is that this will help all of us to treat this insidious disease faster and more effectively than we ever could before.

Equine Comfort Boots, gel orthotics and ice spa boots are designed for unparalled comfort and protection for your horse.

Back in 1991, the horse world was shocked on this day, when laminitis took the life of famed harness racing superstar stallion Nihilator. After more than a year of tireless care by vets and staff at Penn Vet's New Bolton Center , the nine-year-old stallion, syndicated for more than $19 million, was euthanized. Ironically, Nihilator's death came just two short years after laminitis also took the life of Thoroughbred legend Secretariat in Kentucky. In spite of improvements in care and advanced skills practiced by dedicated veterinarians, farriers, and technicians, laminitis continues to be a leading cause of death for horses, whether valuable champions or backyard pets.

In an effort to be kind to the horse, many people forfeit the one thing the horse needs most: LEADERSHIP. It is your leadership that keeps him safe, provides for his needs, and sets healthy boundaries.

We all like to make decisions for the horse that improve his wellbeing - we steer him away from the barbed wire on the trail, provide farrier and medical care that he may not want, and set fences up around his pasture so he doesn’t wander into traffic. Then when it comes to boundaries that affect personal safety, I have seen some folks neglect that very same leadership role, thinking they are being “bossy” or “mean” to the horse.

The truth is, in order to continue to provide for your horse’s needs and make the decisions that are best for his wellbeing, you have to establish leadership. In his mind, in your herd of two, either YOU are the leader, or HE is. Those are the only two options.

The fear many people face is that they will lose connection with the horse if they establish leadership. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you communicate with the horse in a way he understands, and you do it consistently and fairly, you don’t sacrifice relationship - you STRENGTHEN it.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SPOT COLIC IN HORSES?

Colic is not a disease; it is merely a symptom of disease. Specifically, colic indicates a painful problem in the horse's abdomen (belly), which can be caused by a number of different conditions. Less than 10% of all colic cases are severe enough to require surgery or cause the death of the horse; nevertheless, every case of colic should be taken seriously because it can be difficult to tell the mild ones from the potentially serious ones in the early stages.

Horses show signs of abdominal pain in a wide variety of ways, and usually a horse shows only a few of the signs during an episode of colic. The rule of thumb is—the more obvious the signs of pain, the more serious the problem.

If you suspect the horse is suffering from colic, we suggest that you:
• Alert your veterinarian immediately.
• Remove all hay and grain from the horse's surroundings.
• Don't medicate without your veterinarian's approval, as pain medications can mask clinical signs;
• Walk the horse around if it's continually rolling or in danger of hurting itself—but do not tire the horse with relentless walking and don't approach the animal if it's not safe.
• Keep the horse under close observation until the signs of colic resolve or the veterinarian arrives.

The key to increasing the chances of a good outcome is to identify the problem early and get your veterinarian involved from the start. Consult your horse doctor for more information and be sure to ask them how they can be reached if your horse colics after hours!
