Snotty Cats
I know, I know! All cats can be snotty sometimes! I am not talking about their cattitide however, Iโm talking about chronic sinus problems. Unfortunately, some cats suffer with lifelong boogers. There are a few different things that can be going on with these poor felines. From viral and bacterial issues to allergies to something called idiopathic chronic rhinitis. Some of these causes can be treated and the problem cured. Some are lifelong and must be controlled as best as possible.
Letโs start with kitten colds. Many kittens first come in to see me because they have goopy eyes and are sneezing up a storm. Cat colds are common and kittens, like anyone young, get sicker than adult cats. The cold itself is viral and must run its course. A lot of these kids have bacterial eye and sinus infections which we can usually clear up with wise choices in antibiotic eye ointment and oral antibiotics. Most of these kittens are infected with feline herpesvirus. This virus is very common, 95% of the cats in the world have been exposed to it and 80% are carriers. Herpes in cats can cause runny eyes and inflamed sinuses. It can be controlled with lysine supplements and a healthy diet and stress-free lifestyle. I always ask to test all my new cat patients for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses. Both of these cause a weak immune system and can make a simple cold life-threatening.
Once a cat has gotten through being a toddler, their immune system is pretty good at keeping them snot free. There are exceptions to that rule and the problem of sneezy adult cats can be frustrating for the kitty, their human and their veterinarian! It is important to be thorough and stay on top of the issue or permanent damage to the sinuses can occur. When I am presented with a cat who has had a sinus problem from kittenhood, I know there is a lot of work to do to help them live their best life. This involves a thorough complete examination, a history of previous treatments an
