Meet The Trainer!!

We are partnering with Patrick Mote, owner of , to bring affordable group dog obedience lessons to the LaGrange Troup County Humane Society, located at 1390 Orchard Hill Road right here in LaGrange!!
Patrick studied at the Animal Behavior College, and was mentor trained at Harvard's K9, to become a fully licensed, certified Dog Obedience Instructor. He is also Pet CPR Certified and is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. He has volunteered his time with the Humane Society to help us with some of our more challenging pups and we have been amazed by his ability to reach each dog at their level and move them forward in their training to become well mannered members of a family. We are so excited to be able to offer these classes to members of our community!!

Guys, I promise this isn’t another usual my-dog-on-leash-other-dog-off-leash type of post. It gets good! (Or I think it does 🤣)

The other day I was on the local public park (not a dog park, but dogs are allowed) walking Menta. We were on a high movement area, so I had her on a leash. Another dog, off leash, sees us and starts approaching. Menta wasn’t interested and started moving away, but the dog got to us before we could leave. So she politely greeted him back, they sniffed for a few seconds, all perfectly good and fine. Dog was young and wants to play, so he offers a couple of very polite play bows, but Menta declines and moves away. Dog gets the message and moves on.
Quite good, right? Here comes the juicy part:
As I’m leaving owner comes to me with a speech more or less like this:
- Hey, if your dog is autistic and doesn’t even play with other dogs, go somewhere else! Don’t come to the park and ruin the other dogs’ days!!!!!

I heard this, a wave of fury started taking over, but suddenly I think I had a lightbulb moment and switched gears completely.

With the biggest, friendliest smile, I opened my arms as wide as I could and go:

- Ohhhhh! Come here! I want to give you a BIG hug!

*panic in her eyes as she backs up, speechless*

- Hey, don’t run, I’m so friendly, come on, I just want to give you a hug! I’m friendly, I just want to hug!!!

*still speechless and backing away with terror now*

- Wait? You don’t want my friendly hug?

-....no...

- neither does my dog. Have a nice day.

As I walked away, I saw her just standing there, speechless, and she was leashing her dog! 😅
I think I’ll try this approach more often 🤣

Examining predictive cues in canine behavior: Instead of excitement, the sight of a guardian gathering their things and engaging in a specific leaving routine can quickly become linked to feelings of anxiety. This anxiety may begin to heighten long before the guardian’s departure, and is confirmed when the door is closed and the dog is left alone. Resulting symptoms can include urination, defecation, vocalization, destruction, hypervigilance etc. - Anna Bradley

Neutering (including spaying) of male and female dogs in the first year after birth has become routine in the U.S. and much of Europe, but recent research reveals that for some dog breeds, neutering may be associated with increased risks of debilitating joint disorders and some cancers, complicating...

What a great idea!

We're organizing a fundraiser for our local Humane Society. The idea is simple - send us a photo of your pet and $20, and we'll have an artist do an original signed portrait for you, nicely matted and shrink-wrapped. The catch? You won't know who the artist is going to be - it might be a professional artist, an advanced teen, or it might be a six-year-old student! Proceeds will benefit the LaGrange-Troup County Humane Society.

FAQ:
Can I get it by Christmas? Probably not. Give us at least a couple of weeks.
I don't live there...can you ship? You bet. Just add an extra $5 to help cover our shipping costs.
Can I pick my artist? Well, that's no fun. Artists will be assigned at random.
What if I don't like it? Then you can take pride in the fact that you helped a good cause.
How many artists will be working on these? We anticipate about 40 artists at widely varying degrees of skill.
How do I order? You can stop by with a pet photo and cash, check or credit card, or send us a snail mail photo and check to 809 Gallery of Art (attn. Lucky Draw), 809 Hill Street, LaGrange, GA 30241. You can also message us a photo and we'll give you our PayPal address. If paying by PayPal, please make sure to add a comment indicating it's for Lucky Draw, so we can keep everything straight and make sure your donation winds up in the right hands.
How late can I order? Because of our administrative costs and a limited number of artists, we'll have to stop accepting orders after the 75th order.

No Charge!

What is a high drive dog? Broadly defined, it’s a dog that will retrieve until they drop, need to be kept busy at all times or they will “find their own fun”, or will pursue a goal with single minded determination. If you find your dog exhausting sometimes, you might have a high drive dog.

"Under the final rule, which takes effect in 30 days, a service animal is a dog trained to help a person with a physical or psychiatric disability. Advocates for veterans and others had pushed for inclusion of psychiatric service dogs."

Say goodbye to emotional-support animals in airplane cabins. The Transportation Department issued a final rule Wednesday covering service animals.
