Adoption and Achievements of a Remarkable Dog
By: Jane Dyer

McKenzie was born in March, 2022 at The Humane Society of the White Mountains and her journey began. Having looked at several puppies, it was clear to me from the start that McKenzie had potential beyond the ordinary. When the decision was made to adopt her, the goal was to train this promising canine as a Search and Rescue (SAR) dog, a role that requires specific traits and abilities.
McKenzie exhibited several essential traits necessary for SAR training:
Keen sense of smell
High energy levels
Intelligent and trainable
Strong work ethic
Good temperament
She is now ready to nationally certify for “live find” and “human remains” detection and would already be certified if her handler hadn’t broken her ankle.
Besides training for SAR, McKenzie also participates in AKC Rally competitions and has completed her Novice and Intermediate levels. She will compete this year off-leash at the Advanced Level. AKC Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler move through a course with signs instructing them to perform various commands. This activity not only showcases the dog's obedience and agility but also strengthens the bond between the dog and its handler.

One of McKenzie’s most notable achievements came at a young age. At just six months old, she earned the prestigious Canine Good Citizen certification. This accolade is a testament to the dog's excellent behavior, obedience, and socialization skills, laying a strong foundation for future training and competitions.

From her humble beginnings at The Humane Society of the White Mountains to her budding career in Search and Rescue and AKC Rally competitions, McKenzie exemplifies dedication, intelligence, and versatility. Her early achievements, including the Canine Good Citizen certification, highlight the potential for even greater accomplishments in the future. This journey is a shining example of what a “shelter dog” can achieve with the right training, support, and love. I am so grateful to my local shelter for my wonder dog McKenzie.

As you know, the Humane Society of the White Mountains (HSWM) is entirely dependent on donations, grants, fundraisers and our DOGhouse Thrift Shop to support homeless animals in the White Mountains until they can find a forever home.

In 2024:
533 animals came through our doors; many were sick, injured and afraid.

We are so happy and proud to report that we were able to live release 90% of our animals with the vast of majority of these being adoptions into furever homes and the remaining transferred into other shelters or rescues.

We were able to return 62 dogs and cats to their happy owners!

Unfortunately, it costs a lot of money to operate an animal shelter. The daily cost of operations, even with our generous volunteer help, is in excess of $2,351.00 a day, 365 days of the year – that’s $858,055.91 per year! Our operational costs continue to increase as food, medical and supply costs increase, animal transport costs increase, the number of homeless animals we serve increases, and mandated minimum wage increases.

Dusty Rose – A Story of Canine Potential
By: Jessica Bairn

My Navajo County K-9 Search & Rescue Team was invited to the 2024 Critter Camp at the Humane Society of the White Mountains. This day camp has three one-week long sessions with local children being educated on many aspects of animal care and abilities. My team was teaching a “Hug a Tree” class, which is a term we use to teach children to remain in one place when they are lost in the woods.

After the class, I was walking through the shelter, admiring the many dogs who call it “home” until they are adopted. This is where I first met Dusty Rose. She was a puppy, about 10 weeks old, who had just wandered into the shelter’s parking lot. Of course, the shelter took her in but couldn’t find her owners or any litter mates in the area.

At first, she barked at me but then she just sat quietly and looked at me. I asked to meet her and we were taken to a quiet room to get acquainted. The other SAR K-9 team members came in to see her as well. She wasn’t upset by meeting so many strangers at one time. She was sweet, loved people, had a great sense of smell, and wasn’t scared of loud noises. At that moment, I decided to adopt her and start training her to become my search and rescue dog. She loves to work for me - she's very smart, motivated, and loves to play. She’s also very willing to do whatever I ask of her. I’m confident she’s going to make a great SAR partner.

From this experience, I’ve been reminded to never pre-judge what a dog is capable of doing, regardless of its breed or current circumstances. When we give a mixed breed shelter dog a chance to learn and show its true potential, the results can be amazing and so rewarding for human and canine.

A Rocky Road to Recovery

By:Josh Smith

Little Rocky came into the Humane Society of the White Mountains by way of Animal Control in April of 2024. He was only two months old, so small and sweet, but little Rocky had a noticeable skin condition. Once he went through his intake, all the staff involved immediately knew that he had Mange. Conscious of that, the staff had to put a plan in place. If you know Mange you know certain types can be very contagious to other animals. Rocky unfortunately had to be isolated and treated away from others. As a puppy this couldn’t be harder, of course he just wanted to play with people and other dogs, but that could not happen during treatment. Rocky was seen by our amazing Veterinarian Dr. Tammy Helzer who checked him over and found that he didn’t have the contagious type of Mange. Once we found this out, lucky for Rocky, he was able to be around other dogs again. Boy did his demeanor change, being around other dogs made him much happier and spunky. Being that Rocky was a puppy he needed to be playful and happy. The treatment took five long months, but at the end of it Rocky was healthy and ready to find his forever home.

December of 2024 was the month that all of Rocky’s dreams would come true. He was adopted by an amazing family with children and a kitty friend for him. He was so excited to go home and wiggled all the way. Rocky found his forever home and we are so happy to have helped him along the way.

Peter aka “Chaos”: The Sightless One
By: Andrew Bell

On May 14th 2024, Peter, along with 4 sibling kittens, came into the shelter. All 5 of them were very ill and 10 days later, despite all of our best efforts to rehabilitate them, we lost one. While treating the kittens with multiple antibiotics and steroids (for infections on their faces), it was determined by our veterinarian, Dr. Helzer, that they needed surgery on their eyes. When Peter went in for his first surgery in late June, the vet determined that one of his eyes needed to be removed. Dr. Helzer had the staff continue treating the other eye with steroids and antibiotics. On September 19th, Peter went into the clinic for his second surgery. It was determined that none of the treatments had been successful in healing his surviving eye and that it had to be removed.

During all of his treatment I watched Peter’s demeanor and attitude. I fell in love with him. He was the sweetest little kitten, very playful and would just melt into my arms. I decided that I wanted to adopt him and give him a great safe home for a blind cat with attitude. In mid-October, I adopted Peter and changed his name to “Chaos”. I knew from having spent time with him that Chaos was a more appropriate name for him. When I got him home, I was very excited and curious to see how he would adapt to his new home. I watched him walk through my room with his whiskers brushing the wall, all around the outside of the room. He then did the same through the rest of the house. After getting his bearings on the walls and obstacles throughout the house, he never ran into anything. I got Chaos a bed that he grew very fond of. If anybody touches his bed he will attack them playfully, myself included.

It’s been a few months since I adopted Chaos and he is the most loving, playful cat ever. You can hardly tell that he is blind. He gets around well, he will put his face right up against my face in a show of love. He loves to play with me and his chaos matches my own. He has put all the dogs in their places and rules the household. He is very gentle with my foster cat Peanut. Even though he has his own bed, Chaos chooses to sleep on his back upside down right next to my face every night and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Chaos is my best bud and he has found his forever home with me.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be sharing some stories about what we do and how we help the animals in our community. We are kicking off our AZ Gives Day 2025 with a story about a cat that was severely injured on his back and the time it took for him to completely heal.

Johnny Snow
By Debbie Neff
On February 24, 2024, a white adult male cat came into the shelter. He was in a no-kill trap and had a severe wound on the back of his neck. He was extremely scared and unsure of what was going on. In all of the upsets of his new surroundings, he accidentally bit one of the employees. Consequently, he had to be placed on a “rabies watch” quarantine for 10 days. During this time, (per state law) he could not receive any medical treatment but on the 11th day, we started treating the wound and giving him antibiotics.
While receiving his treatment and much loving attention, he finally began to trust us. He soon turned into a staff favorite. He had several surgeries in attempts to repair the wound on his neck and the wound would start to heal. But then it’d take a turn for the worse and we’d be right back to square one. Tests were done to see if he tissue was cancerous which, thankfully, came back negative. He had gobs and gobs of ointments, salves and medications to try to clear it up.
Finally, after 11 months of treatment, love and his pure determination, his wound is healed. Johnny Snow is now on the adoption line and ready to find his permanent loving home. We are unsure if his fur will grow back in that spot, but with his personality, a little missing hair is nothing. He is a “one of a kind” kitty and is going to give all the love he can to that special family who is lucky enough to adopt him.

A Little About the Humane Society of the White Mountains

The Humane Society of the White Mountains was incorporated in 1970 by a group of caring and dedicated individuals who were concerned for the plight of homeless animals in the area. Unfortunately, the beauty of our natural forests compel many irresponsible acts. Pets are often abandoned in the forests by people who truly believe that these domesticated puppies and kittens, dogs and cats will revert back to the wild and learn to fend for themselves. Sadly... they do not.

Those of us who choose to serve and help homeless animals do so because the need is great and will never diminish.

Our Humane Society houses over a thousand animals each year. Many are rescued from the forest, the streets and from lives of starvation and abandonment through our efforts. The animals we serve greatly depend on us.

We are the only open admission Humane Society in Apache and Navajo Counties. Animals cannot help themselves. They depend solely upon the generosity and compassion of humans. Our Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals. The homeless animals we serve also rely upon the generosity and compassion of our supporters.
