We’re happy to have Frank back here at Creekside Canine for a long term board 🐾 so expect more Frank shenanigans 🥰 #bullterrier #minibullterrier #dogtrainer #dogkennel #doggydaycare #cutedog
This is a feeler post - I’m currently working on formal retrieving and AKC Fetch test practice with my own dogs. If I offered a drop in, very causal intro to formal retrieving class most likely in the mornings this summer, would anyone be interested in joining?
AKC Fetch is open to any breed, but my drop in classes would do best with dogs that already prefer fetch as I’d mostly be just offering tips & showing some of the more formal exercises (waits, releases, bring to hand) & giving you a place to practice.
This would be a mostly positive reinforcement class!! I’m not against using e-collar for recall safety, but I do not & will not use force fetch methods & those who do would be dismissed from my program.
Oh & I promise not to laugh when you throw the bumper wrong, but I can’t promise that EmmyLou won’t silently judge you😅
3rd Puppy Preschool Class is in the books!
These guys have done great. The goal of puppy preschool is to create calm pups!! We take 4 weeks and work on impulse control, crate training, place training, intro to loose leash walking & some basic commands. While these dogs are no where near “fully trained” they have a foundation to build more to be the best puppies they can be❤️
My next puppy preschool class is open for enrollment & will start in June! Sign ups are available on my website.
Kenz is living that kennel tech life 😂
We had a great door training session today!
Here I asked the more advanced dogs to go to (or remain on) place cots, but before we added place we just worked on sitting.
Wanna try this at home?
Use an interior door, leave your dog in one room & enter through the door. If your dog jumps on you, back out of the door & shut it. Don’t tell them No or anything as any attention is good attention to an excited dog - but you leaving & shutting a door in their face?! The Message is clear!
Try it again. Repeat until they don’t jump on you. You can give a treat at first for not jumping - mark yes! & reward. After a few good reps like that, start asking for a sit. Mark & reward. Then you can move up to something like place.
Once the dog “gets the game” they’ll be like Timber & Dolly & stay in place for the most part.
If your dog is just way too excited - you can also try tossing the food in a bowl or simply away from you so they redirect away from you. Always mark & reward good behavior!

Another Take Home Training Session: teaching the Heel Position
Dog should be on your Left Side! Food in a treat pouch/on your right.
Fun fact: we work dogs on our left side because historically your horse and your gun were worked with your right because most people are right handed.
The end goal is for your dog to see your hand straight down as an automatic indication to get into that position & sit there.
Cupping the jaw is important if you want a pretty focused heel because the muscle memory of turning their head up will encourage that.
Always reward in the position - so either bring the food to them or switch it from your right to your left after you say Yes.
Repeat this 15-20 times in the session.
After a few sessions in the chair, move to standing up!
From there see if you can take a couple steps (while holding their head) and reward.
Happy Training ☺️
What is Cooperative Care & Grooming? It’s training your dog to easily be handled by Veterinary & Grooming professionals.
As my grandmother would say - it’s just good manners!
My long term Board & Trains as well as Puppy Preschool attendees (and day training dogs upon owners request) all learn about how to be on the grooming table, have their feet/paws, nose, ears and tails touched. They learn how to be okay with brushing if needed, nail trims & the sounds of nail Dremels, clippers & dryers.
This does take time! Thats why it’s only included in 6-8 programs or with young puppies learning foundations.
If you’re interested in Puppy Preschool I have openings in April 1st Class!
If you’re interested in B&T I’m taking applications for openings in the next couple months.
How do we take a simple command and make it more useful (and kind of impressive)??
We practice it a lot so we can build distance!
Drop dog is used in the obedience ring, its also great be able to control your dog from a distance in emergency situations.
Training is a pattern; patterns create predictable outcomes. Predicable outcomes build a bond of trust, and bonds are the foundation of relationships. - me, I said that.
Which is a fancy way of saying have clear communication, simple exercises, high rewards and do it OFTEN.
The most basic Recall game to get your dog to come back to you: using their name, touch/hand target and chase the treat to build up drive to wanna do it more.
Toss a treat to create distance (you can’t recall if your dogs attached to your hip)
Say their name, when they turn to look at you mark with “yes” and offer a treat in your left hand at your left side. (If you dog already knows touch like Tully here, do that instead).
Then toss another treat & do it all over again!
Start short & work to longer distances.
Start in low distraction areas like your living room & move to higher ones as you & your dog become more confident.

Murphy is here for day training & his buddy Miles just showed up for a spa day🥰
FB will only allow a one minute video , Go to my TikTok to see the full video!
How should you set up your training sessions?
Heres the break down:
- keep them short under 15 minutes
- Have a clicker/marker word
- Have a mix of treats varying from dog food to treats to kibble make sure that there’s at least two or three types
- Leash is really good for dogs that get bored (but if you’re doing a short session your dog shouldn’t get bored)
- always end on a good note/repetition.
-never feed for a sloppy one in the first few sessions that you do with your dog.
- Focus on one singular behavior that you were going to mark and reward. I would spend at least five minutes on this one behavior. If you want to try more behaviors they need to be related. (for example you can spend five minutes on eye contact, five minutes on touch, in five minutes on name game/recognition because they all involve building engagement!)
Happy training!
Another foundation training exercise for anyone to try at home!
Teaching touch (nose makes contact with left palm) is a great way to build confidence, bonding & set foundations for bigger behaviors: such as come, heel, leash walking, stand, and other objects targets.
To do it: have treats or whatever reward system to use at the ready. I’m using a clicker (highly recommended) but you can you the word “yes” if you don’t have a clicker. Clicker &/or food is in your RIGHT hand. Nothing in your left. Offer your left hand, palm out. When your dog goes to sniff it (they almost always will) click/say yes when they make contact & feed to the other side from the right hand. Do this a few times, once they “get the game” add the word Touch right before you off the left hand.
Repeat often during your day, this is a quick and easy trick to reinforce & you should do it a lot!!
Please remember keep training sessions short - 10-15 minutes. And focus on one command. I won’t click/feed these dogs for anything other than touch (not for sit, down, engagement, etc).
If your dog tends to wander off - attach them to the leash, sit or stand on the leash to keep them close to you!

Place training with June, ft. Guest star 🐈⬛ Rory 🐾
Hoping to build up some more distance! Place is a great behavior to teach dogs to settle outside of their crates. #dogs #dogtraining
Here I go again sharing training secrets 😂
Wanna know how I set your pups up for success?? We do this all the time. At least a few times a week!
This does require a bit of patience, I don’t recommend wearing short sleeves when you first start this, your dog is going to paw & possibly scratch at you and possibly nip at you. That’s OK, try not to give a reaction (your reaction causes this behavior to continue) we’re not gonna talk, we are going to ignore it and we’re going to say yes or click and feed when they back away.
This app cuts down to one minute and 30 seconds, the full two minute video is on my TikTok. So you don’t get to see the end result but the dogs were drastically different within 15 minutes! And for two of these dogs this was the first time they’ve ever done this type of training session. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #puppytraining
June & Frank - both board & train program dogs - are rocking their off leash recalls ❤️
Interested in training? I’m booked up til March!! But get on my waiting list today.
More tricks!!
Who would be interested in a trick class for the spring?!
Need a little more practical training?
I have Day Training slots (7:30/8am drop off, dog stays all day & trains with me, 4:30-5:30pm pick up) open in the New Year!
Day Training focuses on:
Crate training
Impulse control (like not jumping or running out doors)
Place training
Basic commands: sit, down, touch, come & Down stays (up to 5 minutes)
Loose leash walking
5:00 is an optional group class with any other dogs there for the day to help explain to owners what we worked on.
*owners go home with homework to practice all week*
Timeframe depends on the dog, I would say typically 7-8 weeks is the norm for the foundation commands listed above!
Two weeks of working on bowl work at least every other day & rewarding for being on my left side & now Timber knows a tight Heel command 🥰
Heel is obviously used for showing, and it’s the key to a well leash trained dog. It also helps if you are transitioning from walking on a leash in a hiking or sniff walk situation to moving into a more urban or crowded spot.
Fun fact: we teach heel on the left side because most people are right handed & their dog should be well trained so they only need to sacrifice their left hand to control them (& they can do other things). Typically your horse & gun would be worked on your right side (why you mount a horse from the horses left side) and your dog again with your left!
Creek makes her own rules 🤣
Place training is one of the most useful at home commands if you ask me! It’s great to be able to tell a dog to settle & them do it!
What do you think about me creating a 4 week online course for place? Or would anyone be interested in a 4 week group class on the subject?
Place isn’t that hard of a command, but I feel like 4 weeks is the key to proofing it!
