Since April is National Heartworm Awareness month, we are sharing facts about heartworm disease. Mosquitos transmit heartworm disease by biting an infected animal and transfering baby heartworms to another animal (it is more complicated, if you want to learn more, check out our blog post this month!). While dogs get heartworms more frequently, other animals inlcuding cats can also be infected. Here in the Carolinas, we see mosquitos year-round, so pets need prevention all year.

Chocolate & Xylitol ā€“ A Deadly Duo for Dogs!

We love a sweet treat, but for dogs, chocolate and xylitol (an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candy, and peanut butter) can be deadly. Chocolate can cause vomiting, seizures, and heart issues, while xylitol can lead to dangerous blood sugar drops and liver failure. Keep these items far out of reach of your four footed best friends.

TIP: Check ingredient labels on peanut butter before giving it to your pet! Some brands are sweetened with Xylitol.
