I’m finally finished picking up dog poo from the yards and as I walk past admiring my work - a dog has pooed in the middle of the yard. Some things are just not right. 💩🐾😳

As I was having a big ole time bush-hogging the other day I came upon Denver. He is the oldest dog we have and is great great grandfather to a lot of our sweet doggies and our kids doggies. He has been retired several years and is partially blind and totally deaf which is why he has his own yard where he marches the fence line like a guard protecting us, and the reason he is still lying in the middle of the field and not even noticing the tractor and bush hog. I always have a bad feeling when I see him flat out like that thinking that this is the time he won’t be getting up. But not so. When I gently touched him he jumped a foot in the air scaring both of us - again. One of the big dogs had gone to visit him and forgot to shut the gate. Denver had decided to go on a walkabout and then take a nap in the warm, sunshiny field. I don’t think his plan included a tractor ride but ride he did, sitting on my lap, head high in the air, nose sniffing the countryside aromas while pretending to be looking over the pastures. Some days God gives us the best blessings in the simplest of things.

JUST A DOG -
From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure and unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.

Because of "just a dog," I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog," but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog," just smile--because they "just don't understand."
