The History of Sir Barks-A-Lot

Woof Woof! My name is Wicket! My momma calls me Wicket the Wonder Pup because she wonders what her life would be like without me. I am her third Service Dog since 1995, but I am her first mixed breed and her first dog to be part Boxer, so that presented some new challenges to her. One of those were that Boxers have super sensitive skin! When I was about a four months old, my skin started to get super dry and flaky along with where my harness would rub against me I started to lose all my fur. Momma was beside herself! While at the vet, for what felt like the millionth time, Dr. Moody looked Momma square in the eye and said “you make soap and personal care products, so formulate something for him. I can guarantee you it is going to be way cheaper than anything I prescribe.” From there he gave Momma a list of ingredients that were puppy safe and which ones to absolutely to stay away from. The rest he said were going to be trial and error because like humans, dogs have a variety of sensitivities and allergies too. His staff was amazing at being testing products for Momma over the next year until she moved to Pipe Creek, Texas, where she hopes to find another veterinary staff just as willing to give “stamps of approval” on all of the future products and to provide guidance on development, especially when it comes to animals she has never raised or cared for before. Talking with professionals is always preferred over trial and error when someone’s precious furbaby is involved!

How did the brand get its name? My momma has this wonderful habit of taking in rescue dogs that I love her for! October 2016, we adopted my buddy, Jaja: The Judgmental Chihuahua. His favorite thing to do is BARK! and he taught me how to BARK! Now I LOVE TO BARK! We also have Sophie Lophie, a Catahoula Dachshund with legs that are four inches long, and guess what? She LOVES TO BARK! Because I am so bossy of Momma and my final queueing to her before a bad episode, especially when she isn’t paying attention or confusion is already setting in, is TO BARK at her. Soon she began to refer to me as Sir Barks-A-Lot, along with Jaja and Sophie as Lord and Lady Barks-A-Lot. Late 2017, Momma was talking to her cousin from Ireland, she suggested that maybe Momma should launch a pet care product line in honor of us and call it “Sir Barks-A-Lot.” My Girl Kaitlynn made a rocking distinguished portrait of me for the logo and our official launch was at Barkitecture of San Antonio April of 2018 to some rave reviews!

How do we name our products? This was a tough one! Momma wanted something different and unique. We knew that I was part Boston Terrier and part Boxer, so Momma looked into the history of both breeds to discover that the Boxer breed originated in Germany. Jokingly, she suggested that all products be what it is, but in German. Surprisingly, everyone agreed!

What kind of ingredients are used in our products? Momma runs Sixth Sense Apothecary where she sources all of her ingredients as close to the producer as she can. She also believes in using products as close to their natural state, when safely possible. She also formulates to use the fewest ingredients for the maximum impact as it helps with the “elimination game” when someone is trying to pinpoint an allergic reaction (Momma knows a lot about allergies! She had me specially trained to smell out capsicum to keep her safe and alive!) This is one of the reasons that Sixth Sense Apothecary’s logo is on all of our products, as they are the manufacturer of Sir Barks-A-Lot, much like you see the “J&J” or “P&G” logos on a large variety of products that have different brand names to them. Sir Barks-A-Lot products also follow the same principles of being made “as close to natural as possible.” This means that preservatives or lab created chemicals are used only when necessary to create a safer product.
