Health Benefits
Prevents Reproductive Diseases: Spaying eliminates the risk of uterine infections and ovarian cancer in females, and significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer if done before the petโ€™s first heat. Neutering males reduces the risk of prostate problems and testicular cancer.

Eliminates Heat Cycles: Female cats and dogs in heat can exhibit uncomfortable behaviors, such as vocalizing, attracting male animals, and bleeding. Spaying removes these issues.

Prevents Pyometra: This is a life-threatening infection of the uterus that can affect unspayed females, which requires immediate medical intervention.

Behavioral Benefits
Reduced Aggression: Neutering males often reduces aggressive behaviors, territorial marking, and roaming. Female cats and dogs can also become calmer and more focused after being spayed.

Fewer Behavioral Issues: Spaying and neutering can lead to fewer behavioral problems like mounting, excessive barking, and roaming. Both males and females may be less prone to trying to escape or act aggressively in search of a mate.

Preventing Overpopulation
Reduce Pet Overpopulation: Spaying and neutering your pets help control the pet population and prevent unwanted litters, which can contribute to overpopulation and the strain on animal shelters. This leads to fewer homeless animals and helps reduce the number of euthanized pets.

Community Impact: Fewer stray animals mean fewer animals suffering on the streets, fewer accidents involving animals, and less demand for shelter space.

Cost Savings
Less Expensive Than Raising a Litter: Spaying or neutering is more affordable than caring for a litter of puppies or kittens. There are also fewer long-term costs related to health issues associated with reproductive organs.

Lower Risk of Expensive Health Problems: Preventing certain health conditions that could arise from not spaying or neutering your pet can save you money on veterinary care in the future.

Improved Lifespan
Longer Life Expectancy: Studies have shown that spayed and neutered pets tend to live longer than their unspayed counterparts. This is largely due to the prevention of reproductive diseases and fewer risks associated with roaming or aggression-related injuries.

Social and Environmental Benefits
Fewer Strays and Shelter Animals: Spaying and neutering reduce the number of stray and unwanted animals. Shelters can focus more resources on caring for the animals they already have, improving the quality of life for those pets.

Healthier Communities: By preventing overpopulation and reducing the number of unwanted animals, the community can work toward reducing the spread of diseases that can be transmitted among unvaccinated stray animals.

During the holiday season, it's common to bring in plants for decoration, but some of these can be toxic to pets. Here are the top 5 toxic plants to watch out for around the holidays:

โœจPoinsettias are often associated with Christmas, but they contain a milky sap that can cause irritation to your pet's mouth, stomach, and skin.
โœจHolly berries contain saponins and the leaves can cause upset stomachs if eaten by pets.
โœจMistletoe contains viscotoxin, a compound that can cause serious toxicity in pets.
โœจWhile Christmas cactus is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, it can still cause gastrointestinal upset if eaten in large quantities, especially the flowers.
โœจThe bulbs and flowers of the amaryllis plant contain lycorine, an alkaloid that is toxic to pets.
