Kidding almost done here! One of my Guernsey/Obie crosses still to kid, hopefully! We had a total of 13 doelings and 20 buckling. Good kidding season!

Rain, rain, rain! Add mud, mud, mud and you have some unhappy goats and even unhappier people! Yes, we need the rain but would love it to leave a few days of sun between storms! Kids on the ground, 2 does from Cielito Lindo Elation, 2 bucks from Lassureum, 1 doe from Love, 3 Guernsey bucks from Jewel and Rosegold, and 1 buck and 2 does from Cielito Lindo Mocha.
First milk test of the year with Mocha milking 11.7 pounds, Lass, 11.0 pounds, Jewel 9.0 pounds, Rosegold, 7.4 pounds, Love, 6.7 pounds, Rubi (very ill) 3.4 pounds, Latika, 3.0 pounds (due to be dried up).
Kidding coming up Moonstone and Cardeman!

First kids on the ground! Cielito Lindo Lassauren kidded with 2 nice buckling from Cielito Lindo Lancelot! Wanted a doe from this breeding, maybe next time.

News from Piru Creek Ranch:. No my AI didn't take so Latika went in with Lancelot. We had 3 does on the Nubian Elite Doe list, Mocha, Lass, and Juniper (sold but production while here is good enough to keep her on the list). Our pregnancy test results were great .... only Cappuccino was open so she went back to visit her buck! So we have 5 Guernsey does, 1 Guernsey/Obie, and 6 Nubians to kid next spring! I am still milking 4 does, but will be drying them up soon! Maybe I'll have a couple of weeks with no milking!

Well, I did it! Latika looked ready and although she jumped around did the AI. Hopefully it was successful!

Trying our first AI, hopefully! Thanks for the assistance Chelsea Kissling, think I sorta remember what I learned in class 3 years ago. Now if Cielito Lindo Latika will cooperate!

Pregnancy tests back! 7 out of 10 confirmed pregnant! Surprised by one negative (Muriel) but not Cardamon or Chili! Put 2 Guernsey doelings in with Admiral so in another 30 days or so will be drawing blood again! So glad Michael is good at it!

Plans! Who knew they could go so awry! Intended to spread out the breedings so I wouldn't have so many does freshen close together. The girls had other plans .... 7 came into heat soon after getting home from the Fair! 5 more also came into heat but they will just have to wait! Last year was totally different .... maybe I should just not make plans!

It's a wrap for the Ventura County Fair. We did better than expected. Hopefully the bugs from not having a Fair in 2020-21 will be worked out for next year.
Disheartened by the low youth participation in the Breeding Week. Our Granddaughter Taetum did well in Nubians, Showmanship, and getting the "Judge's Choice" award in Home Dairy Products with her Idaho Huckleberry Ice Cream!

Ventura County Fair coming up! That means getting a goats all shaved, hooves trimmed, udder shaved! Going to be a busy 10 days in this heat!

Besides raising dairy goats we have a small orchard and a garden. Today we harvested fingerling potatoes! Lots of mashed potatoes in our future! 2 years ago we planted one garden bed with asparagus and comfrey. This year Michael added artichokes! He also bought a meyer lemon and a guava tree to add to the orchard. I noticed figs on my fig tree although they are small and will ripen in the months ahead. We also added half a Berkshire hog raised on goat milk and commercial feed (as little as possible)! Guess we will be living on what we produce, at least partially. If you might be interested in a hog in the future, please let us know.

Cielito Lindo Lassuarium, N2022090, kidded with 2 available bucklings! Lass is a Elite doe with a 99% standing, milking 2839 pounds milk, 137 pounds butterfat (4.83%), and 104 pounds protein in 281 days. Lass did milk a until the end of December so this is not a finished lactation! Kids born on 2/24. Picture of Lass in April of 2021.

Well as luck would have it, Cielito Lindo Chili kidded yesterday. I saw a small amount of mucus around 10 am, but never saw or hear any other signs of labor. Brought her in with the milkers and examined her ... could feel one foot. Time to get busy! Gloves, l**e and got hold of the foot .... toes pointing down (breech birth) darn it! Worked until I found the other leg, and realized it was the hock. More searching and got the other leg up and gently pulled. Kid was expired and of course, it was a doeling! The only doeling I have had from Chili or her sister, Cardemon!
On a more positive note, Cielito Lindo Elaton (my old girl) kidded this morning with 2 doelings.
Score: Doelings 13 Bucklings 4!

Seven kids from 3 does ... 5 doelings, 2 bucklings! Knew it was going to be a tough day. And 3 does look like they'll kid in the next few days!

Only about 6 weeks until we have kids on the ground! Everyone looks healthy and getting fat! Couldn't ask for more. We will have kids for sale including some Guernsey kids.

Nice rains here and more to come! Only about 6 weeks until we start kidding with only 2 in January. We have had mountain lion problems this year, seen a few coyotes, and today I saw a bobcat! I was in the car and saw it out by our pomagranite bushes! Looked healthy just hope it stays away!

OPPS! Missed Cielito Lindo Muriel rated 95! Looking at the list, I noticed that Lassurium (Lass for short) was the youngest of those does with a 99 rating. Lass is a 2 yr old along with Latika. Mocha and Muriel are yearlings.

Tested 9 does for pregnancy this week. Report last night and 9 positive! 2 late January, 6 February 2,3,4, and 1 Feb. 7! Going to be a killer week!

Don't you wish breeding plans always went as you planned? I wanted 3-5 does bred in August ... 2 were bred, then 4 came into heat on the 31st. 7 days later 4 back in heat and 3 more! Going to be a busy week in late January!

So pleased ....4 Cielito Lindo does made the August Elite Doe list! Our 2 year olds, Lass (99%) and Latika (96%), 4 year old Juniper (98%), and yearling Muriel (96%)!

Took the opportunity to measure Cielito Lindo Lassuarium milk today. 12 days fresh and milked 11.8 pounds! "Lass" is an Elite doe with a 98 rating. Yes, I have her buckling available. Picture is of Lass last year as a Yearling freshener.
