Mr Mac killed it again at his cooperative care appt. His language, skills, patience and resilience increases at each appt. We now are teaching a hand chin rest. (Not a skill I typically teach bc groomers need both there hands but to gain a solid chin rest starting with hand targeting first then transferring to other object is best way to start.) We will progress to chin rest on a stool or object at the appropriate height for Mac once he is ready. This will help with his overall consent cues during grooming appts and get the few seconds of super stillness for face, head and ears trimming we will need. Congrats Mac!

We made it! We took a nice long walk around the area since we all were cooped up in the car for 8 hours. The area is very cute and I can’t wait to explore more. Once we got to the room lucy found her spot looking out the window. Meko is still figuring out hotel life lol. I’m looking forward to a great week of learning and socializing with like mind people at the .in.motion conference. I’ll be back in the salon Tuesday the 12th!

This may not look like much to some but for Mac this was a big win tonight! Mac comes monthly for cooperative care. We have been working on skills to prepare for the real grooming experience. In the meantime he gets sedated grooms at his vet. We have worked on stationing on the Cato board, brushing and clippers(with no blade) and general handling. Today we decide to experiment. Dad feed treats while I brushed and clipped his body. I was able to shave out his back paws pads and trim around his bum(while holding his tail). He did all this while maintaining his big feelings bc he was prepared! If you struggling with your dog keep practicing. You will have set backs but they help you learn and do better the next time. Tonight we learned that Mac can do hard things and Mac learned grooming isn’t that scary.

Big News!!!! I have posted my monthly nail trim clinic sign ups for the rest of the year. There will be no clinic in December as I am traveling. A few reminders: These clinics are for Dogs only at Petagogy in Shadyside(not Greensburg or my salon) each appt slot accommodates 1-2 pets depending on how much time they need. I don’t rush the experience and I want it to be cooperative and comfortable. Each nail trim is $10, $5 goes to and the rest towards the finest of cheese for my clients lol Looking forward to seeing my regulars and hopefully some newbies!

This is Audrey! She’s alittle nervous for grooming. The past few appts we have gone at her pace and have not pushed her past her comfort. In doing this I built trust and we made big strides today. She was able to get a full groom minus the sanitary. Her back end is alittle off so manipulating her for this part is uncomfortable. Recognizing conformation and limitations due to body types is super helpful in being able to adapt the grooming process bc it might not be ‘I don’t like this’ but ‘this hurts’ which are very different. Let’s give Audrey and her family CLICKS AND TREATS for being patient and understanding during this process.

nail trim clinic is July 1st! Cant wait to see you all then! Also don’t forget to stock up on meds and calming aids, 4th of July is coming around the corner! Petagogy has a quite few natural calming options and toys to keep them busy. But if you have an anxious dog with or without noise phobias I highly recommend getting a prescription from your vet.

Let’s talk more to our dogs! A popular tik tok trend are videos of guardians saying all of their dogs favorite words and seeing how they react. They know SO MANY words and phrases. Why not teach them their own body parts, tools and actions needs for cooperative grooming?!?!

Click the link in the bio to sign up for cooperative care classes. The bucket game is a great way for dogs to express consent for nail trimming, ear cleaning and brushing. This skill will also translate at the vet office for exams and vaccines.

Most dogs go to the vet 2-3 times a year. They are there for 15-60 minutes and get handled the whole time. They have to stand on cold tables and receive pokes with needles for either vaccines or blood draws. Dogs should go to the groomer every 4-8 weeks. They also need to stand on a table for 60 minutes at a time. They are handled and poked but by different objects. Vets and groomers are not always trainers nor does their appt time allow for training to happen. The responsibility is on the guardian to prepare their dog for future visits by either working with the vet and groomer on things to do at home or giving recommendations of trainers that can help. Does your dog need prepped for future grooming appts. Click link on bio to sign up for cooperative care classes with me!

The exam rooms create an environment that helps both you and your pup relax and have a better medical experience. This should be the standard!
