DID YOU KNOW April is prevent Lyme disease month?

Lyme disease a tick borne bacterial illness that is transmitted from the bite of certain species of ticks. Once in the bloodstream, the bacteria can travel to different parts of the body and cause problems in specific organs or locations, such as joints, as well as overall illness. Unfortunately, Lyme disease is a very common problem for dog parents in our area and all over the country. Symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs include:

Fever
Loss of appetite
Reduced energy
Lameness (can be shifting, intermittent, and recurring)
Generalized stiffness, discomfort, or pain
Swelling of joints

Symptoms can progress and cause more serious and fatal issues such as kidney failure or cardiac and neurological complications. If you suspect your dog may have Lyme disease and/or you found a tick on your dog, please schedule an appointment with your vet as soon as possible to determine if your dog has contracted it.

How can you prevent your pup from contracting Lyme disease?

Use flea and tick preventatives year round (ask your vet what will be best for you dog. We personally have used Nexguard, Frontline Gold, Bravecto, and seresto collars.)
Inspect your pet after being outdoors for ticks.
Keep your lawn cut low.
Ask your vet about vaccinations against Lyme disease.

Farce, farce, farce.

Lies about balanced dog training has been allowed to spread like wildfire on social media. Purely positive/force-free trainers spend more time bashing balanced trainers than they do training dogs. I wrote a blog post talking about this and why force-free trainers are actually HURTING dogs and doing even worse than that. They also claim they practice LIMA (Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive) but, they only practice a small portion of it. So what happens to the dogs they can’t help with that small fraction of LIMA? Well…☠️

A hard pill to swallow for a lot of owners is that training is a must when getting a dog. We see this a lot with small dog owners but bigger dogs as well. Dogs come with expenses. Food, vetting, etc. Often times people don’t factor in training. If you are capable of doing it yourself, great! As long as you do it. But a lot of people need to invest in a professional trainer and don’t. This is why we see a lot of dogs in shelters, abandoned or just completely out of control and their owners super frustrated. Dog training is a MUST for every owner! Don’t get the dog if you can’t or won’t make the investment.

Memorial Day weekend is here and you’ll likely be cooking out, enjoying the weather and watching fireworks! We wanted to post a reminder of some tips to help keep your dogs safe during the fireworks because more dogs go missing on holidays that involve them.

For whatever reason, some people feel the need to take their dogs to the fireworks. We promise, your dog isn’t “ohhh-ing” and “awe-ing” at them like you are. Your dog doesn’t like them. Keep them at home.

Create a safe space for your dog at home especially if they are uneasy about loud noises. Whether you put them in their own room or in a kennel…have them somewhere where they can feel safe. Especially if you have guests that will be in and out of your house.

Make your house noisier than the fireworks outside. Put on your radio or your tv and turn the volume up louder than you would normally to help drown out the sounds of the fireworks.

Make sure your guests are aware of your dog. Best case scenario, don’t let them go in and out of your house. If they need something, go and grab it for them. Dogs most often sneak right past them because they aren’t thinking your dog might be at the door.

We hope you all have a safe and fun holiday weekend! Remember why you get this three day weekend. And please…keep your dogs safe!

A lot of these may seem like common sense, but in our society these days…common sense is really lacking. These are 3 things you should NEVER do with a dog you don’t know. This is especially true for children. While some dog bites are unprovoked, a majority of them could have been avoided entirely with just a little common sense. Even with seemingly “friendly” dogs, a dog can feel their space is violated and react in ways we didn’t think they would. But the way they react is natural for them! Imagine if some stranger just walked up to you on the street and put their face up against yours. You’ve never met them a day in your life and they just decide to greet you forehead to forehead. Uncomfortable, right? This is no different for dogs. When strange people just walk up to a dog and shove their hand in their face so “they can smell them” it’s applying an uncomfortable pressure to the dog. Trust us…that dog smelled them two blocks away. Dogs will often time warn us when they are uncomfortable before they bite. These warnings tend to go ignored and leave the dog with no other option but to bite to get out of that uncomfortable situation. Some signs are ears back, tail down or a slow wag, turning their head, licking their lips, stiffening their body, growling, lowering their head, etc. Owners should be mindful of their dogs body language so they can get them out of those situations before anything bad happens because unfortunately, a lot of people just assume they can pet every dog. Remember to always advocate for your dog! The first few “no you can’t pet them” conversations may feel awkward but after that, it’s second nature!
