Frankie and his boy were playing the other day, and when his boy ran out the door, so did Frankie. He ended up running out into the middle of the street!

Thankfully a Good Samaritan was driving the oncoming car and stopped for Frankie.
Phew!
Luckily Frankie and his family already had a lesson scheduled with us for the next day, so we worked hard to make sure that Frankie had a solid understand of threshold manners—meaning when he is and is not allowed outside (even when the door is open).
We are so proud of this whole family! Way to go guys!
The pups loved their visit to @petwantssouthhills! Zeus enjoyed his pig ear and Sarafina enjoyed her sardine!

Bear and Tango are littermates who started fighting with each other in the home.

I never recommend getting littermates. Ever. Please do your research and look up “littermate syndrome,” and know the extra time, effort, and patience, and hard work it takes.

That being said, this owner came to us committed to provide a safe environment for both Bear and Tango. She put in the work and I couldn’t be more proud! 💪🏻 No more fighting, no more reactivity. They are able to coexist, even in situations they couldn’t handle separately just a few months ago.

Mochi the Doodle and Coco the Mutt getting in some good playtime!

Mochi and Coco are both high-energy dogs, and both of these dogs have a similar play style. Do you notice how the dogs are “in sync” with one another? They play-bow, play tag, and even get a little rough-and-tumble for a second. Notice at the end when Mochi shakes to signify the end of play, Coco happily obliges.

While this play style may be too in-your-face for some dogs, these two are a perfectly matched play date.

Can you tell which dog is more food motivated?

Dogs (just like people, chimps, dolphins, elephants, cats, and other mammals) have basic biological needs that need to be met, but what drives each of them individually varies based on past experiences, genetics, and their present state of mind.

For example, Zeus is a working line GSD, and Nunny is a mix. Zeus is more motivated by working with his people (notice the eye contact), while Nuni is more motivated by the resource (laser focus on the food).

Now, Zeus’ eye contact and Nunny’s laser focus can also be explained by the what has been taught to them. Zeus has been taught that eye contact is how he gets the things he wants (remember the name game?), while Nun has been taught that she needs to lay down and wait for the release to get what she wants. Both dogs are right—because both dogs were taught differently.

Lastly, Nunny could just be hungrier than Zeus. Maybe Zeus has had multiple training sessions and a chew today, while Nun might have just come back from a long hike and didn’t eat her breakfast. Nun’s current state of mind might just be “hungry.”

It’s important to keep these factors in mind, as they play an important role in training. Your dog’s motivation is not a concrete thing—it fluctuates.
