🌿🐾 Happy Groundhog Day! 🐾🌿

Did you know that at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, we cared for 99 groundhogs last year? These furry forecasters are more than just weather watchers—they’re fascinating creatures!

🌱 Plant-powered: They munch on greens, fruits, and veggies.
🐿️ Rodent royalty: The largest member of the squirrel family!
📢 Whistlepigs: When alarmed, they let out a high-pitched whistle.
🏊‍♂️🌳 Skilled adventurers: They can swim and climb trees!
🏡 Ecosystem engineers: Their burrows (with an average of five entrances!) aerate soil, helping plants grow and providing homes for other animals.
💕 Love is in the air: Males start emerging in February to search for a mate!

Whether or not they see their shadow today, one thing is certain, groundhogs play an important role in our local ecosystems! 🏡🌿
