I had a wonderful experience at the OFA Health Clinic at the Canfield Fairgrounds this past weekend! It was my first time at this event and it was a pleasure to be a part of it.
I tested several different breeds including Bull Terrier, Yakutuan Laika, American Hairless Terrier, Papillon and a Cattle dog.

What is AKC Rally?

Think of an AKC Rally event as any team sport: You and your dog navigate a course, side-by-side, as you steer him through a course of 10-20 different signs. Each of these signs provides instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. The dog and handler move continuously throughout the course with the dog under control at the handler’s left side. There is a clear sense of teamwork between the dog and handler both during and between the numbered signs. Although each performance is timed, having a good race time is not the goal; it’s all about working as a team while performing the skills, with the dog under control.

It’s a completely natural human emotion to to feel sorrow for dogs that may be blind or deaf. But to bring one home simply off the basis of feeling bad for them will only hinder their ability to grow and learn. Many people believe they have to be their dogs “seeing eye human”, which simply isn’t true! Your deaf and blind dog is capable of so many things when set up for success.

There seems to be an influx of these dogs right now which is concerning. I do not want to sugarcoat that having a dog that is deaf and blind is easy. I am constantly having to coach my clients and myself to realize these dogs are gathering so much sensory information that we just simply cannot grasp because our senses aren’t as strong. In addition, many times these dogs don’t know how to express their emotions other than displaying odd or compulsive behaviors.

If you are thinking of bringing home a dog who is deaf and blind, please realize that it will take work, dedication and time. In so many ways, they are like any other dogs and in so many ways they aren’t.

I had the opportunity to test this sweet Persian kitty. The important message from this one is that cat breeders also need to be aware of having a deaf gene in the bloodline of the parents. In this case, she was determined to be deaf. Hopefully the breeder will do the right thing and have the parents tested as well as the litter mates, and stop breeding them if they do find the gene.

Congenital deafness is often inherited in some breeds, i.e. due to abnormal genes. How this condition is inherited is not fully understood.

I had the opportunity to perform BAER testing (hearing) on a litter of Boston terriers today. It was somewhat bittersweet...
3/5 had identified hearing deficits. 2 of them are unilaterally deaf and 1 is possibly bilaterally deaf.
It's bittersweet because it's both sad and also important to identify when there is a hearing loss with breeding so the gene does not continue to be passed along. This breeder has already decided to spay/neuter the parents, which is the right thing to do!
They will all be capable of living a happy life!
