😽💕 Some late season bean sprouts joined us last week.

These little ones are from a colony we've been TNRing for the past couple years. If you've visited our cat lounge, you may remember Navani, Jasnah, Shallan, and Dal, who all found their forever homes. And Syl who is currently at our cat lounge 🥰 Well they all came from the same colony as these beans. We actually have several other kitties in foster homes right now that came from this colony, which is the result of a hoarding case in Plum. The human responsible had refused to fix her cats, and enjoyed watching the kittens be born but would put them outside once they began eating on their own. This practice led to a huge population of scared, under-socialized, young cats -- many with long fur that gets matted horribly. The hoarder passed away recently, but we're still dealing with the consequences of her carelessness.

We tried for several days to reunite these little guys with their mother. But with no signs of her, we've sent them to one of our fosters who is an experienced bottle feeder. We will have to attempt to trap mom without her babies to lure her. Hopefully these are the last kittens to be born to this area 🤞 but it's probably too much to hope for just yet.

Fortunately these three wee kittens will grow up spoiled and cared for by humans, unlike so many of the ones that came before them.

‼️Time for our ask... It's never too late in the season for kitten food donations! Check out our Chewy and Amazon wishlists with links at rescueandrelax.com/donate

[DONATIONS STILL NEEDED]

Purple, one of our kittens is hanging in after 5 days of a persistent, high fever. He was sent home from where he received some anti-inflammatory meds to help bring down his fever of 105.1. Purple is being treated for "a fever of unknown origin". After the anti-inflammatory injection, he went back to playing with his siblings and acting like himself for a couple hours ♥️ But then his fever spiked again rising to 105.7!! 😿

He went to first thing in the morning and received antibiotics. He's back with us and we have been continuing supportive care. His fever has remained under 105 today but we're still so anxious for him and we'll continue to monitor his temperature in case he needs to go back to the clinic.

We did finally observe some congestion in his breathing and some infrequent coughing. The lack of other symptoms and the fact he still has his appetite was perplexing us. With the newly noted congestion we may bring him back in for chest X-rays in case he's developing pneumonia.

Unfortunately, we were already carrying our highest balance ever at Rivers Veterinary Urgent Care BEFORE sending Purple in... approximately $1500. We've received a handful of donations towards his vet bill and we're so grateful! But we haven't raised enough to offset his care the past couple of days and we anticipate he'll have more vet bills by the time he's past this 😞

If you would like to donate directly to the vet office, call Rivers Veterinary Urgent Care at 412-998-9030 and leave a payment on our account under Rescue and Relax.

[URGENT REQUEST FOR DONATIONS!!]

One of our Kennywood kittens is at the Emergency Vet - - with a persistent high fever 😿

Purple, as we've affectionately called him, was the first kitten that Randi found when she searched the bushes at the back in May.

Purple's caregivers noticed he wasn't quite himself on Wednesday night. He has been eating and littering normally but seemed less energetic than usual. Sure enough, he had a temperature of 104.6 (normal range for a cat is 100.5-102.5). We started daily fluids to help him stay cool and hydrated while we monitored his fever. His temperature went down to 103-104 the next couple of days but shot up again last night.

All through this episode, Purple still purrs and cuddles with us and runs to the dish when wet food is served, and aside from his low energy and not always greeting us at the door as we enter, he's shown few other signs of being sick.

Despite our best efforts to keep him comfortable, his fever has been over 105 since this morning. Clearly his body isn't able to fight this on his own so we decided to check in at the emergency vet to see what can be done to help him get through this🤞🥺

Please donate if you can. Our finances have been drained after such a rough summer of kitten season and so many medical cases that have come up recently. We really hoped we were in the final stretch and could focus on adoptions this month. ♥️ But there's never a dull moment and kittens especially know how to keep us on our toes.

The first batch of Kittens are getting big! Their mom (second pic) is slowly getting more comfortable around people. This group has 3 girls and 2 boys who we have yet to name. We'll make a post soon to gather name submissions 😻 For now we've been referring to them by the color of their collars.

We'll start inviting folks to meet them and apply to adopt once they've been fixed and vaccinated!

In the meantime, please help us support them and our other kittens by sending in more kitten wet and dry food! Our favorites right now are Fancy Feast Wet Kitten Food and PurinaOne Healthy Kitten Dry Food. You can find these and other options on our and wishlists.

[UPDATE] (Watch video with sound on)
We've named this sweet kitty Lego! We thought you'd enjoy hearing the voicemail we received from the vet who cared for her the morning after surgery ♥️

Lego is being cared for by one of our fosters who is a vet tech at South Side Flats Animal Hospital. They were able to do her initial bloodwork and x-rays so that when Paw Prints Veterinary Center in West Virginia confirmed they could squeeze her in for surgery on Saturday she was all set to go!

She's home now and on crate rest. Her leg had to be amputated to the shoulder, since without a healthy paw pad to walk on, leaving any of the leg remaining ran a high chance of her injuring it by attempting to support weight on it.

Fortunately cats adjust amazingly well after amputations and Lego is already walking around with a good degree of confidence.

Thank you to all who sent in donations and offered words of support and encouragement.

We don't know how someone let this happen to her and could let her go so long without care. The vet believes her paw had been in such a state for at least several weeks to be in the condition it was. We're shocked she didn't get an infection or at least didn't succumb to one... And that she remains so affectionate and trusting despite the horrible pain she must have experienced 😞

Once she has recovered from the amputation, Lego will be spayed and will be available for adoption once fully healthy and vetted.

As we mentioned in our last post, please continue to share and donate if you are able! Every little bit helps.

[WARNING! GRAPHIC PHOTOS BLURRED]

Oh. My. Goodness.

We have seen some gory scenes... But something about the lack of blood in this case makes it all the more creepy to us.

This poor baby was brought in to our rescue without warning Friday after supposedly being sent away from a local clinic.

The person surrendering her opened her container to reveal a cat with her paw completely degloved from wrist to paw... This cat has supposedly been owned for 4 years and a leash got tangled around her paw...?

No matter what - we were not sending this cat away. The caretaker claimed they couldn't drive or we would have recommended a humane surrender at an emergency clinic 😞 We are NOT accepting surrenders. And honestly we'll have to charge our upcoming spays and neuters to a credit card in order to afford them. We've had FIVE urgent care appointments this week alone for cats already in our care. But this cat needed SOMEONE to step up and each place that may turn this cat away would risk her being further neglected.

So here we are. Asking for help again. It's truly exhausting 😞 We already have to carry the emotional weight and strain on our schedules and energy to coordinate care for these babies. There should be more public funding for these creatures. We're overwhelmed and burning out. This season has been awful. And if you've had to ask for money you know how awful it feels - and if you've had to ask more than once you know how humbling it gets to admit you need more.

But. We. Need. More.

And it's not your responsibility. Or your fault. Or ours. Or these cats'. We know that. But we're often their only voice.

So please contribute and share. This girl who we have yet to name is in crisis and - no matter what - we will get her what she needs. Please help now... and if you're able... Please continue to help even when we're not begging for it 😞

We’re open again! We're still settling in but we’re so excited to welcome everyone to our new and improved cat lounge at 106 E. Swissvale Ave! 🎉🙌 The cats are especially excited to get alllllllllll the pets 😸

Feel free to stop by the lounge this weekend, Friday-Sunday from 3-8pm and say hello to all our sweet kitties! There are definitely some familiar faces (anyone remember Venus?), and we’ve got a whole bunch of new kittens running around. Swipe to see a sneak peek 👀

Ziti is our sweet girl on the first slide! A lap cat through and through, she’s definitely looking forward to sitting on some new laps.

Thank you so much to everyone for your patience during our move! It took a lot of hard work from our volunteers and we deeply appreciate the support of this community helping us through it.

We can still use donations of supplies and food - especially kitten food!

We also have 34 cats and kittens who still need to be fixed this month, and it's honestly going to be a struggle to cover so many medical bills at once. So please, donate if you're able! Anything helps and $50-100 can cover a cat's basic vetting 🙏 Consider a monthly donation on Ko-Fi to help keep us operating smoothly and cover ongoing expenses.

[Requesting Donations!! $894+]

12 kitties spayed and neutered at today's clinic at Homeless Cat Management Team in Tarentum 😻

This little girl ended up having a "friable uterus", which is apparently not uncommon but means it's a little trickier to suture her back up and she's more susceptible to bleeding. Of course she started licking at her sutures when she got back so she gets to rock a toast soft cone while she recovers 😹🍞

We still have 34 more cats and kittens who need to be fixed this month and it's honestly going to be a struggle to cover so many medical bills at once. If you can sponsor a surgery, they typically cost $50-75 per cat and an extra $12-20 for vaccines. Some clinics cost more and because we work with so many cats we book spots at various clinics depending on availability. We're so grateful to HCMT for allocating so many spots to use in a single clinic ♥️

So please, donate if you're able! Anything helps and $50-100 can cover a cat's basic vetting 🙏 Consider a monthly donation on Ko-Fi to help keep us operating smoothly and cover ongoing expenses. The medical bills never end but we simply don't have time to post them all 🥲

And if you're looking to adopt kittens... Oh boy... Do we have so many that will be available soon 😹

⁉️CAN YOU HELP US CLEAN OUR LITTER ROBOTS THIS WEEKEND⁉️

We're moving to our new building this weekend and our kitties would love a fresh start... including their privies which have withstood 3 years of abuse from our rescue kitties 😬 Squirrel may be one of our smelliest offenders of all time, but swipe to get a sneak peek of Eclipse's litterbox-focus face as he challenges her for her claim to smelliest cat ever at Rescue and Relax 😹

Can you please help us give our litter robots a complete refresh this weekend? Even committing to clean a single machine will help immensely. We have four Litter Robot 3s in our inventory, however two have been decommissioned while we contact corporate for repair options.

These babies need hosed down and spritzed with Rescue cleaner, alas neither of our buildings has a spigot for a hose outside.... You're free to take one home to spray down or drive it to a car wash for some high power de-griming.

Our volunteers and our cats will be forever indebted. Send us a message to coordinate ♥️💩🐈

PS. Are you considering purchasing a litter robot for your own fur babies? We don't actively try to endorse them but enough of our volunteers, guests, and adopters have gone on to buy one that we'd be remiss to share that you can use our referral code to get $50 off for you - and we get $100 credit to purchase an additional one for our rescue! We're happy to share our unbiased opinion of the Litter Robot 3s over the past 3 years of HEAVY use. At the end of the day, our cat lounge would smell a whole lot different without them, and daily cleaning would be much more taxing on our volunteers.

We’ll be closed this weekend (June 21-23) to finish moving to our new lounge space!

Located at 106 E. Swissvale Ave, we’re so excited to welcome you all to our new and improved lounge as soon as our kitties get settled in. Check our social media for the announcement that we’re ready to re-open!

Our new building is just down the block from our old space. We’ll have a sign at our old location pointing you to the new address.

In the meantime we’re working hard to get the new space up and running and comfortable for both kitties and humans alike.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as we navigate the madness of moving, along with all of the demands of an especially overwhelming kitten season this year!

The kittens in the photo are actually the first round of kittens that were found at Kennywood Park this year! If you’ve been following that saga, both sets of Kennywood kittens are doing great. They’re still tiny and adorable little babies so they have a few more weeks before they’re ready to be fixed and available for adoption. Swipe for more pics of these little cuties 🥹😸

A reminder to our followers: we’re always in need of kitten food! Especially wet and dry kitten food. We go through supplies so rapidly with over three dozen kittens in our care.

As always, you can donate to our work the following ways...
Venmo, PayPal, CashApp, or Ko-fi

We’re still getting mail and able to accept cash, checks, and supplies at Rescue and Relax, 117 Edgewood Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15218

We left today with more kitties than we came in with 😅 Canary (see last post) is fine, but these two little boys weren't doing so well. A good samaritan found them outside and surrendered them to Rivers Veterinary Urgent Care after paying for their care today.

The life of a kitten isn't all fun and games. These babies are struggling with an upper respiratory infection that has them terribly congested. And as you can see, the damage from the infection had gotten so severe it caused one of the little guy's eyes to rupture. At only 4 weeks old, he's too tiny to safely perform surgery to remove the bad eye. So our job is to get them big and healthy so that he can be ready for surgery in a month or so.

We hate seeing kitties forced to live outside with little to no care... This kitten season has been the most brutal and overwhelming we've seen. Please spay and neuter your pets and encourage your friends and family to do so, as well! Write your representatives to tell them that free and affordable spays and neuters are important to you and to our community. These tiny creatures don't deserve to be born into such hardship 💔

Please donate kitten food and kitten formula if you're able. The stories of the Kennywood kittens helped bring in kitten food orders, and our kitten families are quickly and steadily working through it. 🥰

Canary is at for irritation in her ears that has caused a lot of debris and scratching. Once this issue clears up she'll be joining us at the cat lounge and be available for adoption 🥰

She earned her name 🐥🎶 Canary is a vocal little lady and will mew and chirp for attention. She'll also keep you up at night with her calls if you don't let her join you at bedtime 😹

We’ll be closed on Mondays until further notice!

As we’re preparing to move to our new lounge space (just down the block!) this summer, we’re adjusting our hours and will not be open on Mondays.

We’re working hard to get the new space up and running so we can welcome kitties and humans alike in this larger and improved space this summer. It’s just down the street, so no need to worry about finding us as we’ll still be in the neighborhood. More details to come as we have them!

We appreciate your patience and support as we navigate moving along with all of the demands of kitten season!

A reminder to our followers: we’re always in need of kitten food! Especially wet kitten food. KMR and pine/paper pellet litter is also helpful. We go through supplies so rapidly with three dozen kittens and counting in our care.

KENNYWOOD KITTENS ROUND 2 🙀

Well we didn't expect this. We got word yesterday that a ride in Kiddieland at Kennywood was down because a black kitten had crawled under it!

Randi Krohmaly reacted swiftly and arrived at the park just as they had decided to close due to tornado warnings. Fortunately, security allowed her to stick around and she caught a mama cat and 2 kittens within an hour. The third kitten went into the trap shortly after, but a fourth kitten proved stubborn. Security allowed her to remain as late as they possibly could, but she eventually had to leave without the last baby. Don't worry! She's back there this morning to get started before the crowds pick up.

We've learned of a black tomcat that sometimes roams the park, so we'll work to get him fixed. Some amusement parks, like Disney and Legoland in Florida, allow cats to roam the park in order to keep rodents under control. They have the cats fixed, feed them, and provide access to shelters in case of harsh weather. If there are feral cats established at Kennywood, we'll see if they'd be willing to accommodate a similar system so that we can help them with a TNR program and make sure kittens don't continue to spring up like this.

We've received several donations of kitten food thanks to the articles shared about the first batch of Kennywood kittens, but we can still use more wet food, dry food, kitten milk replacer, and litter!

You can donate to our work the following ways...

THE KENNYWOOD SAGA CONTINUES! After a guest found a kitten yesterday near the exit of Kennywood we asked our network for help searching for her siblings and mom. Randi Krohmaly, a local trapper, and our volunteer, Matt, searched until 1:30am to catch each kitten and mama one by one.

♥️ If anyone finds any more kittens in the area, please let us know. Randi is headed back to search tonight to make sure no one was left behind.

Now for names... Does anyone have a connection to Kennywood leadership to see if they may want to sponsor some of the cost of care for these kiddos in exchange for naming them all after rides at the park? 😉 We can take votes on which rides get the honor of being associated with each of these cute furballs 😻

Thank you Randi and Matt for helping find this kitty family! We couldn't have dreamed they'd all be reunited so quickly and we're thrilled!

Thank you to the guest who found the first kitten and thought to bring her to a rescue for help.

And thank you to Kennywood staff and security for allowing us to search all night and agreeing to contact us if any more kittens are found 🥰

A reminder to our followers: we're always in need of kitten food! Especially wet kitten food. KMR and pine/paper pellet litter is also helpful. We go through supplies so rapidly.
