UPDATE: AWLA is offering a reward for information that leads to the criminal prosecution of an individual or individuals related to this incident.
On Wednesday December 4th, 2024 just after 8pm AWLA’s Animal Control Department was contacted by an Arlington resident who discovered a brown and tan dog with cropped ears in critical condition located near S Walter Reed Drive (around the intersection of 14th St S and the Walter Reed Community Center). Responding officer Animal Control Resource Deputy Karina Swetnam immediately transported the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic. The dog had no identification tags of any kind or microchip (he was wearing a metal chain collar), but our team named him "Walter" until his identity is better known.
At the emergency room, it was discovered that “Walter” ,was covered in sores, emaciated and was experiencing severe hypothermia. We are deeply saddened to report that "Walter" did not make it through the night.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate resident who stayed with the dog and provided care until Officer Swetnam arrived.
AWLA is currently collaborating with Arlington County Parks and Recreation and Arlington County Police Department to investigate. We are now asking for our community’s help - if you recognize this dog, have any video footage from the area around the time of the incident (including Ring doorbell cameras, dash cams, etc), or have any information in regards to this situation, please contact AWLA’s Animal Control team at (703) 931-9241 or [email protected].
