Litter box maintenance = a healthy, happy Siberian cat! Pam Johnson-Bennett explains why.

Litter box maintenance = a healthy, happy Siberian cat!

Pam Johnson-Bennett explains why.

Scooping your cat’s litter box multiple times a day isn’t just about cleanliness—it’s a crucial health monitoring tool. Many cat parents miss the opportunity to detect early signs of medical issues simply because they don’t maintain a consistent scooping routine.

Changes in your cat’s elimination habits, waste appearance, or frequency can be early indicators of health concerns. When visiting the veterinarian, one of the first questions asked will be about any changes in litter box behavior. Without regular scooping, you may not notice these important signs, making it harder to provide valuable information that could aid in early diagnosis.

Stay proactive—your cat’s well-being depends on it!

Microchips must be scannable and registered to work.

Your chip must be registered for your pet to be safely connected to you.

Vets and many shelters will scan pets for free.

There are *many* microchip companies. It’s always a good idea to double check at your Siberian cat’s annual exam that her microchip is registered and your information is up to date in the databases.

Request - Insist!! - your Vet scan your kitty at each visit and that your Siberian’s chip is a part of their veterinary record. This ensures the chip is readable and also helps remind Vets & Techs how important microchips are. Check to be sure yoir chip Is registered. Ask the Vet’s office for Information on how to do this.

For example , the “Save This Life” microchip company (NOT used by ForestWind!!) closed their doors and disconnected their microchips from national databases, so any animal with this brand chip needs to be registered with a new company.

Information on that situation found here: https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/microchip-company-closes-pet-owner-next-steps/

The Texas-based company, Save This Life, has ceased operations and that could become an issue for pet owners.

Behaviour modification for Siberian cats.

Tips from Pam Johnson-Bennett

Instead of relying on punishment and sq**rt bottles, a more effective training approach involves understanding the purpose of the behavior and providing better alternatives. For example, if the cat jumps on the kitchen counter, identify the motivation behind the behavior. It could be the smell of food, a desire for a better view out the window, a need for elevated safety, or a bid for the cat parent’s attention. Once the underlying reason is determined, a suitable alternative can be provided. If the behavior stems from a problem in the environment, such as a cat being ambushed by another cat, positive behavior techniques should be employed to diffuse the situation. Squirting the cat with water is not part of a sound and loving training plan.

Cats respond to positive training but it’s crucial to start the process by recognizing that every behavior serves a purpose. Cats don’t misbehave out of spite or defiance. Behavior makes sense to them. Proper training strengthens the bond, restores confidence, and reduces stress.

Did you know your Veterinarian’s office may offer Pet Loss or Grief Groups to support you through the loss of your Siberian cat?

These groups have become more common.

Other options are working with a therapist, and checking social apps such as Facebook or NextDoor for local online or in-person support groups.

The number of resources for coping with a beloved animals’s death has grown in recent years as some providers noticed an uptick in demand for their services.
