One of the most important decisions you'll make for your companion parrot is their living space. Here are some tips on how to pick the perfect cage that guarantees safety, comfort, and room to spread those beautiful wings.

Size Matters:
- Golden Rule: The cage should be a minimum of 1.5 times the wingspan of your bird in both width and depth. More is always better—go for the largest cage you can afford and fit in your space.

Safe Materials:
- Ensure the cage is constructed of safe, non-toxic metals like stainless steel. Watch out for any coatings that might be harmful when ingested.

Bar Spacing:
- Bars too far apart can result in injuries, while bars too close together can trap your bird's head or limbs. Make sure to choose the right bar spacing based on your parrot's size.

Inside the Cage:
- Furnish with a variety of toys, perches (opt for natural perches and several different sizes), and foraging opportunities to keep your bird mentally and physically stimulated. But don't over-clutter; they need room to move.

Freedom to Fly:
- Your parrot should have scheduled time outside of the cage daily to stretch their wings, fly, and engage with their environment and owners. Ensure your parrot has some cage-free time.

Extras:
- Look for cages with practical features like easy-to-clean trays, food and water dispensers, and lockable wheels for mobility.

So there you have it! A good cage is an investment in your bird's health and happiness. With the right home, your parrot will have a safe space to rest, play, and watch the world go by!

🦜💦 Bathing your parrot isn't just about keeping them clean; it's crucial for their overall health and happiness. From the spritely Budgie to the grand Macaw, all parrots benefit from regular baths for feather care, skin hydration, mental wellness, and respiratory health. Offer a bathing bowl for a fun splash, a light mist for a gentle touch, or a full shower for those who love to get drenched. For newbies or shy birds, patience is key—start slow, read their cues, and gradually build up to a full bath for a stress-free experience. Keep your feathered friend chirpy with a suitable splash!

AVIAN MEDICAL CASE OF THE DAY: BIRDS SHOULDN'T SMOKE!

We can always tell when a bird lives in a household where it is exposed to smoke, because we can smell it in the feathers. In some cases of prolonged exposure, we even see white birds that look brown. This cockatoo came in to our office 6 months ago reeking of smoke with every feather discolored. It took 3 baths with Dawn dish soap to remove most of the color and stench, but she will have to molt to get back to completely normal. Happily, her feather plucking has improved in her new home, because the ni****ne is no longer irritating her skin.

We don't know what effects va**ng may have on a bird, but we do know that they are about 10 times more sensitive to toxins in the air than humans are. Please don't smoke, v**e, or use other products that produce fumes around your birds. Even things like air fresheners or perfume can make them sick.

Diet is so important!

This is being shared as a PSA - The ExoticDVM veterinary forum is discuss the possibility of Cheerios causing zinc toxicity in a budgie. The Cheerios have not been tested but empirical data (removing the cheerios as a treat the bird is now responding to treatment. Whereas, when the cheerios were present he wasn't) suggests they were the culprit.

Beware of what you are feeding your birds!
