***THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TAKING AN ADULT SHELTIE INTO YOUR HOME!
This information can be applied to any dog of any breed at any age.
Too many adult dogs are lost within the first 48 hours of leaving their previous homes. Some will say accidents happen, yes they do, and they WILL happen if you leave room for them to happenโ€ฆ.Meaning you should understand that as soon as these dogs leave the care of their previous owner they will become scared. This doesnโ€™t mean they havenโ€™t been raised right. This means that you are not their person and this new place is not their home. If you give them the opportunity to escape they will absolutely take it and they will NOT come to anyone they do not know.
Dogs can slip out of flat collars, harnesses and bite you out of fear to escape. The safest place for them is in a crate inside your vehicle. If they might need a potty break, it should only happen inside a securely fenced area. If they have an accident in their crate during transport, itโ€™s a lot easier to clean up rather than trying to catch a scared dog on the run. If that dog is killed, you will look back and that pile of p**p in the crate will not seem like such a big deal.
โŒ Don't take the dog out of the crate during transport unless absolutely necessary.
โŒ Donโ€™t try to walk the dog outside of a location thatโ€™s not securely fenced, just move them to and from in the crate.
โŒ Donโ€™t let the dog off lead at your home if you do not have a fenced yard.
โŒ Donโ€™t let the dog roam free in the home if the front door (leading to an unfenced yard) will be used frequently (this is a big concern with homes that have children running in and out)
The 3-3-3 Rule:
3 Days:
In the first 3 days after your new dog comes home, he is likely to feel overwhelmed with all the changes and may be scared. He might not want to eat or drink and may just curl up in his crate or hide somewhere and that is okay. Patience and setting them up for success is vital during this time period. Be sure to give them time & space to get comfortable and more familiar with their surroundings and routine.
It is important not to ask much out of them during this time, bonding will come so you shouldnโ€™t try to force it. Things like calling their name over and over or trying to lure them to you with food/treats is a big DONโ€™T. A better approach is to ignore them and let them come to you when they are ready.
3 Weeks:
After about 3 weeks, your dog will start to settle into his new home. He will feel more comfortable and start to figure out his new environment. He will get into a routine (donโ€™t forget, you need to help with that!), and start to show you his true personality. Of course, that can have drawbacks and if your dog has any behavioral concerns, they will tend to manifest around this time. At the 3-week mark, it is a good time to invest in some training, teaching tricks, obedience etc. This will get his mind working and will begin to create a bond between you and him in a healthy setting.
3 Months:
After 3 months, your dog should be settled into their routine and feel completely comfortable in his or her new home. They should be developing trust in you and gaining a sense of security with their new family. And donโ€™t forget brushing up and continuing to work on new tricks or skills is always a good way to continue to build your bond and keep them mentally stimulated.
Bringing an adult dog into your home can be very rewarding and the right move for those that just want to skip the puppy stage. However, it is a night and day difference between bringing home an adult vs a puppyโ€ฆ.so youโ€™ll need to weigh the pros and cons. Then be honest with yourself about your own capabilities. Both require time and patience. But with an adult you must be diligent and keep them safely secured until they accept you as their new family. Well even after, but with time, you can trust them with more freedom.
For breeders rehoming adults, I recommend placing a tracking collar on the dog that stays on for the first month minimum. For me, going forward the purchase of a tracking collar will be factored into the purchase price of the dog. A copy of this information will be sent prior to any agreement taking place.

My sweet friend Tyrion. He was here on Halloween for a spa day. Little did I know this would be the last time I would see him. I found a lump under his neck and told his dad to call his vet as the lump seems concerning and should be checked out. Well turns out it was cancer and nothing could be done so my little friend had to go over the rainbow ๐ŸŒˆ bridge. I will miss you sweet boy, run free with your pal Jamie (aka the Arctic Fox) he is waiting to welcome you. RIP ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜ข

Halloween is just around the corner! Time to plan for a successful evening! If your dog is particularly stressed, it's always fine turning your light off and hunkering down for the night.

In my house my dogs are upstairs eating frozen Toppls, with the TV on a little louder than normal, and I sit outside with the candy and non-candy treats!

The dogs are not stressed or worried about the monsters, dinosaurs, princesses, and more who visit the house and I'm free to enjoy the evening giving out full-sized candy bars and non-food goodie bags to all the trick or treaters!

What's your plan for halloween?

Great advice from our friend Tena at Success Just Clicks!

Some dogs love dressing up in bulky or strange-fitting costumes and others loathe it. Respect your dog enough to not force them to be miserable for hours dressed up in a costume they hate. If your dog is happy in dog shirts, you can try a festive shirt. Or, if they don't like clothes in general, try a holiday bandana or a festive collar instead!

Although you might want to bring your pup along for trick or treating or sitting outside with you, some dogs can be really traumatized by people in costumes. You might love watching the inflatable t-rex costume kid run up and down the street roaring but your pup may find that very scary. Or the kid in the scary mask with a crazy axe prop marching up your driveway to get that candy could look like an approaching threat to your dog. Some dogs are unfazed, but other dogs can be really traumatized.

Have a fabulous and safe Halloween!

BEWARE OF THE QUICK FIX!
There are no quick fixes when it comes to lasting, successful behaviour change, whether with ourselves or with our dogs.

Want to lose weight? The quick fix of diet pills, meal replacements or slimming machines may initially be successful, but is unlikely to last. Long term success will require effort, a change in mind set, being mindful of emotions, eating less or differently and exercising โ€“ there is no quick fix.

Want to get a qualification? Hard work, long hours, commitment and effort is the only way.

The same principle applies to bringing about a change in behaviour.

We live in a society where we want and expect quick fixes. Our lives are often so busy, stressful and complicated enough without having to even think about spending time and effort in trying to โ€œfixโ€ our dogโ€™s problems.

Why not just use a shock collar, choke chain, spray bottle, shake can or send them off to a board and train facility to quickly sort them out without us having to put in any time or effort? What about a trainer that guarantees quick results? There are never any guarantees when it comes to behaviour.

Stay away from quick fixes โ€“ they usually come at a great cost. Yes, they may suppress that particular behaviour but it is likely to surface in another way and we wonโ€™t like that either.

Changing behaviour takes time, it requires understanding, consistency, patience and commitment, but the results of โ€œfixingโ€ something the right way, are worth it.

This quote by Wayne Muller sums this up perfectly โ€œIn the soil of the quick fix is the seed to a new problemโ€ฆ.โ€

Our protocol (as of this year) here at Wind Whispers is for puppies to stay until 12 weeks old age and get first vaccination at 12 weeks. This is known to be a golden spot of time where vaccinations cover puppies 100%, and before this studies on puppies have shown less than 100% which leaves a few open to exposure. Also, we fill they are older, stronger, and less likely to have a reaction to a vaccination. โค๏ธ๐ŸŒบโค๏ธ

๐Ÿฅฆ Dogs need to eat their veggies, just like kids.

Here's how dark leafy greens can improve your dog's health.

1. Remove toxins. They have chlorophyll that adheres to and removes toxins.
2. Improve brain and heart health. They're rich in magnesium to support cognitive function.
3. Provide energy and support wellness. They contain iron that delivers oxygen to the blood.
4. Prevent arthritis and other chronic diseases with their anti-inflammatory properties.
5. Slow down aging. They're rich in antioxidants that repair cell damage from free radicals.
6. Improve digestion and keep the bowels moving because of they're rich in fiber.

๐Ÿฅ— Make sure your dog gets lots of dark, leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, watercress, dandelion, chard, cabbage, kale, arugula, endive, turnip greens, beet greens, and collard greens. And don't forget microgreens that have as much as 100 times the nutrients of mature plants.

Blend, chop or steam them and add them to your dog's meal.
