Join in on the fun! Class starts soon!
Flyball is a super fun fast paced sport! Dogs take 4 jumps, grab a ball off of a mechanized box, take those 4 jumps back while carrying their ball (and then the next dog on the team goes if they aren't dog singles).
This class covers important foundation skills to know before working on the sequence of the game! Recalls, ball retrievers, recalling with a friend, matwork and wallboard work for boxturns, and a ton of work watching dogs calmly as they have fun!
Class starts July 15 at 7:25pm! Register on our website!

This is the last 2.5 minutes of about 6 minutes of video I took of Meep having some feelings in his pen within the first week of him coming home (the first 4 minutes were 50% more intense and the pauses were 50% shorter, but there were still pauses and de-escalation). As it unfolded, I realized how great of an example it is of a situation where I absolutely do let them work through feelings when in a pen or crate.
(Also when I say close supervision in the video, I'm not engaging with him, I'm pointing my phone at him but looking at the TV, but I'm right there in case he jumping on the bars he pinches a toe or what not, and also why he has a collar on. If he's unsupervised, the collar comes off, if I'm in the room, it typically stays on so I can run him outside on leash quickly if needed).
The feelings I let them work through are tired feelings or feelings of being unsettled and not knowing how to sleep\settle\chew as a response to those feelings. This will NOT work if the feelings are about the pen or crate or confinement. The puppy must be good in the box as a baseline. If they can't be in the pen most of the time with no fussing, this isn't how to respond.
In most cases, the fussing in the crate is about the confinement and crying it out is only going to create more problems with the crate or pen and you shouldn't do it.
But in reality, letting them out anytime they vocalize a little may not be the right answer either (see my doodle as an example of this. Truly this is likely WHY she became mine). This is a really good example of when I do let them work it out and won't just let them out and rethink my plan.
So enjoy 1min 50sec of him fussing, jumping at the bars, biting bars, and then 40 seconds of him falling asleep lol

And the spot is filled! We've had some shuffling around in our Scentwork classes that start Tuesday 1/2/24 and we have one spot open in the Intermediate Scentwork at 7:20pm.
This is a rare opportunity to jump into one of Melissa's classes. It's only happened a few times in 5 years that we post about her classes having a spot. I don't expect this class to last long now that we are sharing it!
Our class levels are not he same as other places. Our intermediate is more like a level 3 class elsewhere (many already have ORTs, NW1, level 1 or 2 CWAGs titles, etc).
Intermediate students should meet one or more of the following:
1. Completed our Intro to Elements at least twice and with permission of Tena to move on
2. Can find all 4 common odors, are familiar with interior, exterior, container, buried, submerged, and vehicle searches, can work outside at our training center's shopping center environment, can be in class around other dogs successfully (minimal barking), an owner who can read their dog well enough to call an alert OR a dog with good enough trained final response for the handler to call.

(Enjoy Oswin's NW2 second interior search video! She's done most of her sniffy stuff in class with Melissa and she has great independence, great confidence, zero issues with falsing, etc. )
Magic Mat class is really a super fun class! High speed sport foundation skills for flyball, agility, rally, and obedience plus the settle side of mats for greeting people, inviting guests in the home, getting your door dash dinner without drama. Plus a lot of work on adding distance to skills your dog already knows!
This class turns out to be a favorite by many students because of the fast paced games that are great at tiring out their pup and adding a new level of skills by adding distance to tricks or skills!

Parkour class (aka preposition class lol) has a few spots open starting this week! Dogs learn things like 2 paws on, 4 paws on, in, around, over, across, and through (plus a couple non-prepositions). This is such a fun class to learn skills to tire out your pup and spice up your walks!
Learn all the skills inside in our equipment but practice in the real world! You'll learn safety practices to keep it safe and about the rules so if you choose to do video submission for the novice parkour title, you'll be ready for it!
Come have fun!

We are offering the test 2-3 times per year and it's open to anyone!
Magic Mats are Magic! This is "the class I didn't know I needed but is now my favorite" per an SJC regular! What I love about this class is that is pulls in both fast paced high energy games and pairs them with settling, relaxing, and self control games, all using a mat!
Dogs will learn foundation skills for high level obedience skills like sit/down/stand from movement and drop/sit/stand(stop) on recall and how we can use these same high level skills in day in and day out contexts with the foundation understanding for your dog of do the then where/when I give the cue, not run up to me and then do the thing.
We'll use a mat to teach skills like back up, running contact foundation for agility, and matwork for boxturns in flyball (and these fun games are GREAT 'tire out the dog in small spaces' games).
We'll also work a bit on the dichotomy of REV UP with those fast paced games and then lay on your mat calmly while I relax or while people walk by or as I walk to the door and open it to grab a package.
1 tool = many different skills and games that can help in daily life and for sport dogs!

We've had a couple spots open up in our Life Skills Class starting April 3! We cover skills that are designed to make your life a little easier!
Send your dog to a station from a distance and send them after someone knocks on the door. Stay on their station as you collect a package from outside the door, stay on their station while you prepare them a snack, and stay on their station while you walk around. Settle on their station while you have a snack and settle on their station as dogs walk by. Wait at doors until released forward and wait in the car until you release them through the door. Leash walking games for outside practice and leash walking by other dogs. Plus more work on impulse control around things your dog may want.
This is a fun and flexible class--each class is slightly different than the last based on the dogs in class! This is an intermediate to advance level skills class--it can be appropriate for a range of dogs!
Dogs will be working in close proximity to other dogs so they cannot be reactive to people or dogs.

We made this video a while ago for a project for some colleagues, it may not be used in it's entirety for that project, so I figured it's a good Association of Professional Dog Trainers National Train Your Dog Month Video!
I have a much longer Loose Leash Walking video up on youtube, but I was challenged to shrink that video into 2 minutes... i couldn't get it that short but managed to put it in under 3, so I feel like that's a win!
So here's a super abbreviated video on how I teach Loose Leash Walking to my dogs (and that's one of the skills I work a ton on early on because I walk all four of my dogs together on a regular basis and I want to enjoy our walks).
This is not a perfect walk through since I was alone, but this is a quick video of the Well-Trained Dogs Can Do More Test. The 1-2 minute acclimation after coming in the room isn't included, test item 3 would be longer in actuality while the evaluator gave instructions for the next few test items, the evaluator will call out the pattern for the leash walking component so you don't have to remember the whole thing, and obviously the neutral dog would have a human with them and wouldn't be allowed to stare.
Each skill has clear criteria for how it is to be scored. For example, on test item 2, if using the crate instead of the raised platform. A team earns 6 points for entering the crate with a single cue, waiting quietly for the duration, waits with one cue while the handler opens the door to attach the leash, and exits when cued. The team earns 4 points if the dog needs 2 cues to enter OR two cues to wait while the leash is attached. But is settled for the duration. The team earns 1 point if the dog needs 2 cues to get in and 2 cues to wait or there is 10 seconds or less of vocalizing or distress in the crate. The team earns zero points if the dog is unsettled in the crate for more than 10 seconds, the dog releases from the crate without being given the cue, or the dog needs more than 2 cues during any one part of the test item.
Got questions?! We are happy to answer them! Are youa professional interested in becoming an Well-Trained Dogs evaluator? Just reach out!
The handbook will be released tomorrow with all the details! And the first test in Pittsburgh will be announced soon!

Don't let this FUN class pass you by! This is a great class--basic manners, advanced skills, and tricks all rolled up into one class! Really, it may seem sorta boring, but it's not your grandma's mat class!
One of our long time SJC students who has taken most all of our class offerings from basics through CGC and plenty of sports/tricks games said that of all the classes she's taken this one was her favorite and was full of great games to play using just a mat.
Class starts Friday and we had one person need to drop out unexpectedly so there are two spots open!
