Just finished. I played with this for about three weeks. Lot's of thin oil glazes in the background and some thicker Impasto on the deer.

This was one of my favorite places. It exist most importantly in my memories of hunting Grouse in the Allegheny National Forest in northern Pennsylvania with my brother and my Uncle Lou. It's early October and the trees are just starting to turn. There is a flat area just above a natural spring, to the right are thick Hemlocks and across this top the Beech trees drop nuts and attract the Grouse. On the backside it drops off into the deep forest, a long way from any road.

We always seemed to jump a deer or two there.

If this reminds you of a special place I's like to know where in the comments.

Last week while walking my dog near the school in our neighborhood I saw a small black butterfly on a butterfly bush. Not more than an arms length away the image stuck in my mind. And in the mood to still paint red cannas I added it to the composition.

No title yet but will probably go with something like-

Red Cannas and Black Butterfly

Enthralling title huh?

I had a few more photos of my neighbor's Red Canna flowers in reserve and I wanted to paint another Hummingbird--soooo I drew up another composition on one of the 9x12 linen canvases.

Closer up this time so that I had some wiggle room on how to paint the Copper Penny throat patch.

Originally I started out with the crossed brushwork background in greens, golds an yellows (Sorry never took a photo of it). And it looked okay but it wasn't the stop someone in their tracks look I want. So I reworked the whole background with a palette knife and some Lead based white--oh yes you can still buy Lead White if you know where to look. I let the original based colors come through where they did and then added some slashes of colors here and there. My concept was to attempt to convey motion.

Yesterday I painted the top half of the flower and at the time thought it would be good. However I looks at a lot of other artist's work and saw some excellent concepts. They racked around my cranium all night finally waking me at 5.

In addition this morning I found out my friend and art teacher had passed. He always pushed me to take risks and I could hear his voice telling me I could better with this painting.

So I went downstairs and statured to rework the top half of the Canna flower. I painted the bottom half and pushed the whole thing in several attempts farther into the abstract.

I then started to render the tail of the hummingbird with the idea of keeping it loose, soft, wispy and even ethereal. Kind of there but not all there at the same time.

Two and half hours of painting left my concentration shot--and this where I left it for today.

I'm not trying to do a hyper accurate depiction of the flower of the bird. Rather I'm reaching for a quick glimpse.

More tomorrow--or Monday
