Today we honor Pippin. Pip-a-roo, Pippy Boy, Skippy Pip. We toast to a dog who trusted, inspired, taught, and loved us. Pippin was a source of laughter, joy, and at times, stress. He had an unimaginable zest for life, and did all things with exuberance. He was our very own bouncy, flouncy, made out of springs Tigger.
We will always remember his utter enthusiasm for training. He loved to work and while he didn’t exactly know how to play when he first arrived, he quickly developed his own game of tossing stuffed toys as high in the air as possible then racing to catch them before they landed. He was fast, and loved few things more than creating his own steeplechase courses in the yard, running at full speed and leaping over rocks, bushes, and patio furniture. He loved to explore with his nose and was a natural at scent games. He would get super excited when the Nosework supplies came out to play, and you could hear his nose working a mile a minute. We set goals for him that included competing in Nosework and agility. While Pippin cautiously enjoyed meeting people, he was a dog’s dog. He had a few besties that he loved playing with but was always up for making new four legged friends. He was a connoisseur of produce and while he thought celery was a waste, he thoroughly enjoyed carrots, apples, and snap peas.
Pippin was heavily motivated by affection, and loved to be curled up against someone he loved, or even better, sitting in their lap. He would snuggle in and nuzzle for pets. He loved to cuddle and always somehow managed to compress himself into a tiny ball to fit on your lap or next to you.
Pippin came to us as a surrender case. Not even a year old, he arrived under socialized and overwhelmed with a bite history. We saw incredible progress within the first few weeks that gave up reason to believe that he was a good candidate for rehabilitation. He loved working, was open to building relationships, and quickly settled into a routine that he enjoyed. It b
Walking With a Drink! ☕️🥤
In advanced class last night, we decided to work on walking with water to practice a scenario where King and Maria might be at a brewery, coffee shop, etc, and need to walk nicely with a drink. Maria has been relying a lot on having a tight leash and using leash pressure instead of using praise and King’s e-collar. Leash pressure doesn’t work for King and Maria can become anxious with having a loose leash, so this was a big challenge for them! There was a lot of problem solving done for both King and Maria during class. We needed to help King understand the exercise and we also needed to help Maria guide King through it with a clear picture of what she wanted from him. The more Maria praised King, and reminded him of what she wanted him to do, the better he did! We know you’ve seen King in a lot of our videos and he has quickly become one of our demo dogs because of how well trained he is….BUT, what you don’t see is how much work and effort that goes into training him. Training your dog can be a lot of fun if you stick with it, can be flexible in training styles, and aren’t afraid to get water splashed all over you 😉💦🐾
King is demonstrating dog neutrality! 🐾 King has been a client of ours for 4 years. When he first started, being dog neutral was something he wasn’t able to do. He would pull, bark, only pay attention to the other dogs, etc. —— King has learned that engaging with his handler is much more beneficial than trying to engage with another dog 💙 Does this mean King isn’t dog social? Nope! He loves puppies and (some) dogs, and enjoys having play time. But, he knows he needs to be dog neutral until he is given a command to be dog social. Your dog always being dog social can get them into trouble very easily. Our goal for all of our clients and their dogs is this level of dog neutrality 💙🐾 What steps do you think King and his owner took to get to this level of neutrality?

🎉Dogs on a Treadmill🎉
Have you seen a dog running on a treadmill or slat mill? A quick social media search will show you plenty of dogs running on treadmills at high speed. Why is this even a thing?
Mill sessions can provide excellent exercise regardless of time of day or weather conditions. If a dog is properly conditioned to the behavior, this outlet for energy can be one of the safest options for dogs who are overweight or is generally too much of a klutz to safely play indoors. The sessions are not just physically tiring but also offer great mental stimulation for a dog.
The second reason we introduce the concept of walking on a treadmill is training. The end result videos that you can find on Instagram are the result of countless sessions of breaking the behavior down into tiny steps and helping the dog gain a clear understanding of what we want. Every dog navigates this process differently. Some dogs struggle with the sounds or textures of the machine. Sometimes a dog will be confused if they are supposed to sit or walk. Regardless of what path the process takes, it requires breaking each step down into even smaller steps and repeating each of those smaller steps enough that the dog is comfortable before moving on.
Please remember that introducing this type of behavior can be difficult and if rushed can be dangerous to the dog. Please contact a professional to discuss this for your dog before trying on your own. 🐾
Our Mr. Kinger’s did such a great job learning this new technique at his monthly tune up today! He will for sure be getting his exercise this winter! 💙 Maria Elizabeth

Saturday Morning Group Class ⭐️ These dogs are rockstars. Today, we practiced engagement walking near other dogs :: let’s also give Roscoe (the German Shepherd) a huge shoutout. When we met Roscoe, he was barking, lunging, and reacting to everyone and everything. But his parents were committed to working him and became his best advocates. Through muzzle training, learning his body language, and committing to group class and now advanced class - Roscoe is calm, confident, and he knows that his parents are in control and won’t put him in an uncomfortable situation. For instance, when we practice greetings, Gwen advocates and nicely says “please don’t pet my dog, but you can throw a treat at him!” 🐾 Roscoe, we are so so proud of you!
