House passes ban on Russian oil, natural gas and coal
The House voted with a wide bipartisan majority Wednesday to pass a ban on importing Russian oil, natural gas and coal into the United States.

The bill will also take steps to revisit Russia's role in the World Trade Organization and reauthorize the Magnitsky Act to strengthen sanctions on Russia for human rights violations.

The final vote was 414-17, with two Democrats – Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri and Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota – and 15 Republican members voting against the bill.

Though the bill garnered wide support, it was not immune to the drama that accompanies most major pieces of legislation.

The White House asked the House Ways and Means Committee on Monday to pause on introducing legislation to ban Russian oil imports in order to work out "issues" with the bipartisan agreement reached on the Hill.

With the momentum on the legislation briefly paused, Capitol Hill leadership got involved to continue conversations with the White House throughout Monday.

The earlier version of the legislation included a provision that would suspend permanent normal trade relations for Russia and Belarus. But the White House expressed concerns over that part of the bill, and ultimately it was excised.

The Republican ranking member of the House Ways and Means panel, Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, characterized the revised legislation as a weaker bill, but said that even with the watered down provision, "there's certainly bipartisan support" for the bill.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had originally scheduled the bill to come to the House floor for a vote on Tuesday, but it ran into snags when Republicans wouldn't commit to provide enough votes to get the bill passed under a suspension of the rules, which requires a 2/3 majority to pass, according to a Democratic leadership aide.

The House Rules Committee met in the early Wednesday morning hours on the bill enabling it to be passed with a simple majority.

WBG;

The Supreme Court said Monday it will not take up the sexual assault case against comedian Bill Cosby, leaving in place a decision by Pennsylvania's highest court to throw out his conviction and set him free from prison.

The high court declined prosecutors' request to hear the case and reinstate Cosby's conviction. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court last year threw out Cosby's conviction, saying the prosecutor who brought the case was bound by his predecessor’s agreement not to charge Cosby.

As is typical, the Supreme Court did not say anything in rejecting the case. The case was included in a long list of cases the court said Monday it would not hear.

The 84-year-old Cosby became the first celebrity convicted of sexual assault in the era when a jury in 2018 found him guilty of drugging and molesting Temple University employee Andrea Constand in 2004. A jury had previously deadlocked in Cosby's case, resulting in a mistrial in 2017.

WBG DAILY;

Matt Hutchins, the husband of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who died while filming the movie “Rust," blames his wife's death on the movie's star, Alec Baldwin, as well as "industry standards that were not practiced" on set.

Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by a bullet from a prop gun on Oct. 21 while on the set of “Rust” at Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Baldwin was holding the prop gun when it fired, though he told authorities that he never pulled the trigger.

WBG REEL NEWS:

Right now 10 states in the country offer U.S.born adoptees and their birth parents unfettered access to original birth certificates: Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon and Rhode Island.

But in 18 states, from Arizona to North Carolina to Wyoming, a court order is required to allow adoptees’ access to the originals. A compromise is offered in the remaining 23 states. In some, including Delaware, Iowa and Pennsylvania, the original birth certificate can be obtained only with the birth parents’ names redacted. Twelve other states have restrictions that only allow access for adoptees born in certain periods; for example, before 1968 or after 2021.

WBG; REEL NEWS

At least 10 percent of women and 20 percent of men who smoke will ultimately die of a CVD event like a heart attack or stroke, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

While some may have been aware they had CVD, many will have had no idea they had CVD before it killed them, the researchers found.

The first “symptom” of their illness was their death.

This was most likely to happen to people over the age of 60 – 4.9 per cent of female smokers, and 6.7 per cent of male smokers.

Hannah’s boyfriend Bobby Jolly has been arrested by police, but they are declining to confirm whether it is in connection with her death.

Revealing the news in a post on social media, Daughtry said he was “absolutely devastated and heartbroken” by the news.

“I am still processing the last 24 hours,” he wrote. “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken. I just recently lost my mother to cancer but I was blessed with the chance to say goodbye and I was processing it privately.

“We never got to say goodbye to our precious Hannah and it’s another huge hit to our family.
