Italy is officially allowing medium and large dogs to fly in the cabin with their owners - not just tiny lap dogs. This change, approved by ENAC (Italy’s Civil Aviation Authority), means our big pups can finally travel beside us instead of being stowed in cargo. The first demonstration flight has already taken off, marking a major step forward for animal welfare and pet travel.
The updated ENAC regulations state that the combined weight of the pet and its carrier must not exceed the maximum weight for an “average passenger.” (Sources: Outlook Traveller, Wanted in Rome, Anilogistic). In other words, there isn’t a clearly fixed number in kilograms. It’s based on what’s considered an average passenger weight.
So I guess it depends on who’s doing the math… but if my dog is 140 pounds and I’m 100 pounds, I think we’re safe. 😉
If you’ve ever worried about flying your dog in cargo, this is the change we’ve all been waiting for. ✈️🐶 Airlines will still have their own seating and safety requirements, but Italy’s move signals a huge shift in how we view pets, not as luggage, but as family. Let’s hope this becomes the new normal worldwide.
