The Top 7 Rules for Responsible Pet Ownership

Owning a pet is one of life's greatest joys but also one of its significant responsibilities. However, to ensure they lead a happy, healthy life, it's crucial that owners commit themselves wholly to the duty of care pet’s demand

1. Adopt, Don't Shop
Choosing to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue center is the first step in responsible pet ownership. Adoption educates owners about the importance of spaying and neutering, which helps reduce the number of unwanted pets.

2. Commit to Regular Veterinary Care
Pets, like humans, require regular check-ups to maintain health. Preventative care, such as vaccinations, and flea, tick, and heartworm medications, are essential to long-term health.

3. Provide a Balanced Diet
The adage “You are what you eat” applies to pets as much as it does to humans. A balanced diet tailored to the specific needs of your pet's age, size, and activity level is pivotal for their well-being.

4. Ensure Adequate Exercise
Physical activity is indispensable for a pet’s health, impacting everything from cardiovascular fitness to behavioral well-being. Regular exercise helps manage weight, reduces the risk of diseases, and can curb unwanted behaviors by keeping them mentally and physically stimulated.

5. Train and Socialize Your Pet
Training and socialization are foundational elements of responsible pet ownership. They not only make for a well-behaved pet but also enhance the bond between pet and owner.

6. Create a Safe and Stimulating Environment
Your home should be a safe haven for all its inhabitants, including pets. This involves pet-proofing your space to prevent accidents and providing toys and puzzles that challenge them mentally.

7. Be Prepared for Emergencies
Emergencies can strike when least expected, so having a plan in place can make all the difference. This includes knowing the number to your nearest veterinary emergency clinic and consider microchipping your pet to facilitate their return if they get lost.

To sum it up, responsible pet ownership requires a proactive, dedicated approach, reflecting the profound bond between pets and their human companions. By adhering to these seven top rules, owners can ensure their pets lead a full, vibrant life while fostering a deeper understanding and respect for animal welfare within the community.

Cheyenne Veterinary Center joins the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in celebrating Black History Month by highlighting Black pioneers in veterinary medicine.
"This February, we honor the accomplishments of generations of Black women and men that have helped shape this country and this profession," said Dr. Douglas Kratt, president of the AVMA. Cheyenne Veterinary Center will spotlight these pioneers though out the month,
• Dr. August Nathaniel Lushington believed to be the first Black person to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in the United States upon his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania in 1897.

Good morning all. I'm finally back out of quarantine and actually feeling a bit human. Please be patient this week as we are still playing catch up (despite the awesome job the staff did while I was out). Have a great day today!!

01/22/2024

Good morning all. Unfortunately, I tested positive for COVD this morning so will need to be out of the office for a few days. Please bear with my fantastic staff as they try to shuffle appointments around to try to get everyone taken care of with minimal disruption. The next few days may be a bit crazy for the staff so please be kind and realize the mountain of work they now have (on top of the mountain they do every day). Your patience is appreciated.

Sincerely

Dr. Steve

Good morning all!! As of right now, we are opening today as normal. If the weather gets dicey later we will consider closing early, but for now it is business as usual. Please use your own judgment if you have an appointment today and stay safe.

01/18/2024

Tis the season! If you haven't heard, the national weather center has a winter weather advisory for our area (Eastern Ohio, Panhandle West Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania). As of right now, we still plan on opening tomorrow. If we get the snow they are calling for, plans may change. I will do my best to alert everyone as early as I can. Please remember I do not live near the office, so I will be relying on local staff, family, and friends to update me on the conditions at the office so we can make the decisions we need to make. Please be safe and make sure to exercise caution if we do get the weather that is called for tonight.

01/16/2024

Please be careful today. If you have an appointment here, just let us know if you are running late or if you need to cancel due to roads. While most roads are ok, some are slick. We do not want anyone risking injury or property damage to come in. Be safe out there and have a great day!
