As we all know, times are tough and a bit tight for everyone. Our community pet food bank for not only Berkshire Humane as well as Animal Dreams (Our Community Cat Program) can always use donations of the following supplies as we are again running low on the items listed below. These items are a constant necessity, and donations are always welcome.

Cat food--dry and canned
Clay cat litter **non-clumping
Canned dog food
Dry dog food
Bleach
Trash Bags

Items can be dropped off at our main location at 214 Barker Rd, Pittsfield or ordered directly through our Amazon and Chewy wish lists. If ordering for Animal Dreams via Chewy, please specify them directly--thank you in advance!

How about a little ?

Our first photo features Jessica along with adoptable dog Tilly. Jessica is the director of the . Greylock Extended Care Facility Powerback Rehab. Jessica organized a giving tree with our wish list items as ornaments on the tree. Staff and patients were able to take a tag and place an item under the tree. Jessica recently delivered a varied supply of much needed items along with cash donations. Thank you Jessica and everyone at Mt. Greylock Extended care for your generosity!

Our second photo features Hannah Burrows and Katelyn McCormack; seniors at Wahconah Regional High School along with adoptable dog Stella. Hannah and Katelyn raised $319.50 from their Civic Project for their government class. When asked why they chose Berkshire Humane as their charity of choice Hannah stated "we wanted to support a local animal shelter, and my family has adopted cats from here." Thank you ladies for your generous fundraising efforts!

We're happy to report that our long term resident Dexter found his people this past week. Dexter originally arrived as a stray in 2013, found a family, but was brought back to us after his owner sadly passed away. Dexter was adopted again, but was not given the proper time to adjust, so alas, he found himself back at the shelter again. After spending almost 3 months at the shelter, he was awarded the kindness of Hope and Paul, who chose this handsome, senior boy as their own.
Let's say a third time is his charm.

Congratulations Dexter, Hope and Paul--we wish you many years of happiness together.

Does your dog struggle with reactivity (barking or lunging at dogs, people bicycles, vehicles, etc.) while on walks or out in public? If so, our Reactive Rover class will give you tools to address these problem behaviors and help your dog feel calmer, safer and more secure on walks in the presence of their triggers.

We currently have 2 opens spots available in our upcoming Reactive Rover Class beginning on January 19th at 5 pm.

This is a 6-week hybrid course: 50 percent online via Microsoft Teams, 50 percent in person. The first three classes will be held online where you will meet your instructor and class members and get personalized instruction and “homework” assignments each week to be completed with your dog. Weeks 4-6 will be in-person at Berkshire Humane Society, where you will have an instructor assigned to work with you and your dog to integrate the skills you learned online into a group class setting (among other dogs and humans). This class will be SMALL (4 dogs maximum) and has a 1-to-1 student-teacher ratio during classroom time to ensure individualized instruction and success for each dog-handler team.

To learn more or to sign up please email [email protected] or call (413) 447-7878 x. 139

It's a day full of thanks--

Students from the Abbott Memorial School, Project 351 team pose for a photo after they raised $500 for Berkshire Humane.

Here's what Middle School Math and Science teacher Stephanie Pare shared with us--

"The Project 351 team at the Abbott Memorial School in the town of Florida held the 19th Annual "Oh Be Thankful Pie and Dessert Auction" on November 21, 2023. This was the kick off for the annual food drive that is held at the school as part of the fall service with a focus on a campaign to end Hunger in our communities. As part of these events, students were able to donate $500.00 to the Berkshire Humane Society, along with food and treats donated as part of the food drive.

The students also made donations to the Al Nelson Friendship Food Pantry and the American Legion Post 125 Holiday Dinner."

We extend our thanks to these generous students for their thoughtfulness and compassion towards not only Berkshire Humane, but to the Al Nelson Friendship Food Pantry and American Legion Post 125! Here's to you!

WOW--what can we say?!

Debbie Storie did it again!
Debbie publishes a calendar yearly using the beautiful photographs she takes and sells them with all money dedicated to helping the shelter pets of Berkshire Humane. This year's calendar featured fabulous photos of the African safari she took this year. Debbie raised $1600 in donations and contacted the shelter to see what we needed most for her shopping spree. And boy, did she deliver!

We thank you Debbie for your continued support and generosity! Thank you as well to everyone who purchased a calendar to assist her mission--

Happy

Eliza, Rosali and Rose stopped by with a donation from a New Year's Day bake sale they held. When asked what made them decide to donate to the shelter they said--"we wanted to help homeless cats, so we decided to have a bake sale to raise money".

Thank you girls for your compassion and kindness--it speaks volumes!

Looking for a furrtastic feline with a dog-like personality? Then look no further than Darby! This 2-year-old buff domestic shorthair originally arrived back on December 1st along with another cat who was soon adopted. Darby did find a home, but unfortunately allergies forced him to be returned to the shelter. So, now this handsome and friendly fellow is waiting again for his forever home to call his own. Darby has lived indoors only and is extremely social. He is good with children and enjoys being held. Darby’s only vice; he’s not a fan of dogs, so a dog-free home would be best. If you enjoy felines who love to be with their people and will shower you with attention, purrhaps he’s the cat for you! If you adopt Darby between January 1st-January 7th a portion of his adoption fee will be underwritten by Haddad Subaru!

All it took was a photo and highlight in the Berkshire Eagle for Bella, our resident senior dog to find her people. Her new adopters saw her feature and headed right to the shelter to meet her where it was an instant love match. They had just lost their lab mix in November and were ready for a new companion; so after spending a little over three months at the shelter, Bella's wish for a new home came true.

We couldn't be more happy for the three of them. Congratulations Bella and your new family!

This cool and refined gentleman is Maxwell! Maxwell is a 5-year old American pit bull terrier mix who was found abandoned in a home after his previous owners moved away. Initially scared when he first arrived at the shelter, he fortunately became fast friends with the good people and dog friends he’s made at Berkshire Humane. He thoroughly enjoys snuggling with staff and volunteers, along with hanging out with his dog friends. Maxwell is completely housetrained as well as crate trained where he chooses to regularly snooze the day away. Maxwell is heartworm positive, but not to worry. The shelter staff have been treating him and will continue to do so. This is so his new family doesn’t have to do anything other than keep him nice and quiet throughout his treatment, which will take about 6 months. He would do best in a home without cats as he does have a bit of a prey drive, but he’s been completely gentle with all humans, so children aged 5-years and older would be okay! Maxwell can be a bit excitable and exuberant in how he shows affection, but don’t let that deter you! He knows basic obedience, so with continual training, his new person can manage that with ease. If you think Maxwell could be a good fit for you and your family, or you would like more information about him & his heartworm treatment, please call (413)-447-7878 ext. 126 or swing by the shelter to potentially meet him or speak directly with kennel staff. If you adopt Maxwell between December 25th-December 31st a portion of his adoption fee will be sponsored by our generous partners at Haddad Subaru! Celebrating 90 years as your hometown auto retailer & pet lovers!

Are you on this Friday?

We are! Here's a lovely update on recently adopted kitty Milo!

"We are in love with Milo and he has made himself right at home. He is playful, curious and loves to give kisses! I would encourage anyone to adopt a cat. Considering we had 2 dogs and a cat, he was the perfect choice for our family! Happy Holidays!"

Looks like Milo is living the good life, wouldn't you agree?

On we have many people to thank!

Christopher Brown Jr. made dog treats and sold them raising $150 for the shelter animals. He also brought in some of the treats for the shelter pups. His fundraiser was part of a giving project at school and he chose Berkshire Humane Society as his recipient. Nice work Christopher!

Our second nice gentleman, Derek Weber pictured with his brother Evan, acquired donations instead of birthday gifts for his 9th birthday! He got a couple of nice pictures with adoptable dog Tilly. Way to go Derek!

Lastly, Debbie and her Federal Credit Union work family collected much needed donations for the shelter. Here, Debbie poses with recently adopted pup Laney! Thank you Debbie and GFCU!

During the season of giving, we'd like to give thanks to the wonderful individuals who have so graciously given back to those who can't speak for themselves. The homeless pets of Berkshire Humane Society.
