Due to the extra chilly conditions the next couple of days, we are limiting outdoor zoomie time for everyone's safety. But don't worry! The slatmill is an excellent outlet for the dogs with extra energy! It has no motor so the speed is entirely up to the dog!
New Baboo Update!
Baboo joined us for his third day of Day School and continues to make great strides in his training! He is learning to trust the handler in every new scenario that we put him in where there is another dog. Riot has always been Baboo's biggest trigger (likely because of his explosive movements and intense personality) so we often have Riot out playing while working with him.
Baboo is learning how to watch those explosive movements while keeping his cool and staying connected to the handler, even when he is technically off leash (at this time, he has only been trained using a slip lead so it is the only training tool on him)! He gets rewarded for making all the right choices (staying connected to the handler). We will never bribe a dog for their attention. Instead we work to recondition their undesirable response to stimuli that typically triggers them and reward them when they make the right choices!

New Baboo Update!
Baboo successfully completed his third day of Day School, demonstrating significant progress in his training! He's developing strong trust in his handler, consistently navigating new environments and interactions with other dogs. Riot, with his explosive movements and exuberant personality, has been a significant trigger for Baboo. To address this, we frequently incorporate Riot into Baboo’s training sessions.
Baboo is learning to maintain composure amidst distractions, staying connected to his handler even with leash freedom (currently only a slip lead has been used). He's rewarded for choosing to stay engaged with his handler, a crucial aspect of our training philosophy. We prioritize building a strong handler-dog bond, a topic we'll delve into further in a future post. Our approach focuses on reconditioning the dog's response to triggers, encouraging desired behaviors through consistent expectations and reliable rewards, rather than coercion or bribery.
Benson would absolutely get the title of Class Clown here at Maven! He's feeling quite silly this morning during drop off. 🤣 And what a good boy staying on his bed the whole time!
Baboo update! Baboo joined us for his second day and his confidence was through the roof! He was slightly hesitant to walk towards these dogs at first so we utilized threshold training to build his trust in the scenario and handler. With this technique, he quickly adapted as he realized he was safe and these dogs weren’t going to come into his space. Trust between dog and handler is our foundation to building a confident, happy dog! Nice work Baboo!
Baboo the 6 month Australian Cattle Dog recently started to develop some pretty severe dog reactivity. His owners were referred to Maven and contacted us immediately. He joined us today for his evaluation day and boy he is one spicy pup!
His reactivity stems from a combination of under socialization and genetics. You can see in the beginning of the video how unsure he was of the situation when he first walked in. Then the second he realized the dogs on the beds were real, his reactivity was triggered.
We noticed pretty quickly that he lacked overall confidence in all new scenarios he was in, even just walking from one room to the next. So today we set out to find his biggest motivator (he's a big foodie) and go from there! We worked on building a bond with the trainers first and foremost. From there we worked on boosting his confidence and building problem solving skills using slightly difficult physical challenges. After that we re introduced a neutral dog. Now that Baboo's brain was more settled, he had no idea how to interact with a calm dog. That's where we start building his social skills and reinforce a new conditioned response to the sight of dogs!
We don't typically use clickers in our training (instead we utilize verbal markers) but we have found that reactive dogs tend to respond better to a clicker. Most likely because they are used to drowning out the human voices they hear when they are keyed in on a trigger. There is no one way to get the end result in dog training so we are open to tools and methods that benefit the dog in front of us.
We are excited to continue working with Baboo on his journey and help build a dog his owners can take anywhere with them!
I also want to quickly acknowledge how deeply grateful we are for our neutral dogs here at Maven. They are invaluable piece of the puzzle when working with all dogs who come to us for training. They have all come so far in their training journeys to be able to achieve this level of trust in u
Hello everyone!
We will be starting group classes starting Tuesday, January 7th! Spots will be limited and are only open to dogs currently enrolled in our Day School program. Classes will be held every Tuesday at 5pm starting on the 7th and will run for 7 weeks. Any age dog is welcome to join! This class will cover obedience and beyond! We will go over how to handle real world scenarios that every dog owner faces.
Cost is $400 for the 7 week course. This includes 1-1.5 hour classes once a week and handouts and course work to take home each week. Please email us at [email protected] to sign up or to ask any questions you might have!
We are soaking up as much sun as we can on this beautiful fall day!
During drop off for Day School & Day Care we have dogs start in either a kennel, playpen or on beds. This gives everyone time to settle in and get ready for their day with a calm, relaxed energy! Here is a video of everyone relaxing after being dropped off! Notice how quiet it is?! That's because we keep our expectations fair and consistent. The dogs have no worries and no reason to be anxious or over stimulated. Nice work Wednesday crew!!
