SAFETY ALERT: As temperatures moderate and we get more precipitation, our dog walking/hiking needs made change. Below are some basic safety tips.
If you need traction, consider something like Yaktrax (coiled) which are less likely to puncture the dog’s foot in case of a misstep.
If you have a competition Obedience dog, train a cue for “in front” or “with me”, but NOT heel. Because these dogs are so heavily rewarded for that close, beautiful heel position, it may take time to condition them to move away from you (and reduce the risk of being spiked).
Dog booties may help, but remember that they need to be conditioned prior to use.
Consider a head halter if you have a strong and/or impulsive dog. That added control of the front end may keep you on your feet should the dog bolt.
Always check your dog’s paws after hikes/walks. Look for foreign bodies, redness, inflammation, bleeding or any other unusual conditions.
Keep a basic first aid kit in your pack and consult your veterinarian with concerns. (NOT Facebook or someone who stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night)!
