Hi Friends!

With the upcoming cold-snap , we hope you and your pets can stay as warm and cozy as Dr. Pepper 😸

4 helpful tips to keep your pets warm and safe 🤔

1) Avoid long walks. Feet, legs, tails, and ears can get cold fast ❄️

2) Our short haired and smaller friends should wear a jacket

3) If walking on salted sidewalks or roads, use booties or wash the paws off when returning home 🛁

4) Keep anti-freeze products out of reach and only use pet safe ice melts. Consuming either product can be extremely toxic

Hi Friends!

For this week’s Fun Fact Friday, we would like to introduce you to Riverbend’s hardest working employee… Dr. Pepper! 😸

While Dr. Pepper awaits her acceptance to vet school, she spends her time roaming the clinic and assisting where needed. Her favorite activities include stealing her co-workers lunch, testing the prescription diets we carry, and searching for the best sunbeam.

Next time you’re in the clinic, keep an eye out for Dr. P!

Hi Friends! It's time for Fun Fact Friday✨

Did you know that over 50% pets are overweight? We all love giving Buddy treats whenever he is a good boy, but too much weight gain can lead to several health issues. Obesity can lead to diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and more.

Remember to measure out how much food Buddy is getting and track those treats throughout the day!

Check out the next two slides to help determine where your pet falls on the body condition scale.

Hi Friends, it’s time for fun fact Friday! 🧐

Pancreatitis (a frequent cause of vomiting and diarrhea) is more commonly seen during the holidays.

While it's tempting to give Fido an extra marrow bone or a spoonful of gravy over kibble, too much fat in your pet's diet can cause gastrointestinal distress. Variety is not always the spice of life, so stick with your vet recommended diet! ✨

We are celebration Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week!

A note from Dr. Morrell:
This is always one of my favorite times of the year at the clinic. Not only has Halloween always been regarded as a national pastime at Riverbend, we get to celebrate our amazing support staff.
2024 in particular has brought with it a new set of challenges that we have had to face together. Our vet techs are on the front lines of those changes, and have showed amazing adaptability under these circumstances. In many ways, their job is much harder than mine - I watch in amazement as they answer ringing phones and doorbells, fill prescriptions, draw up vaccines (and so much more) simultaneously. It's really remarkable to watch and takes a special skill set to excel in the job!
How can you help us celebrate our amazing staff? Feel free to let them know how appreciated they are if you stop by or call in this week. But above all, I beseech everyone to please show kindness and patience in your interactions with our staff. Trust me when I say they advocate for your pets, know their names, and get excited to see them. Because of them, we are able to give the best care possible.
They are really a pretty awesome group of people!

Traveling with your dog this summer? As you may have heard in the news, bringing your cat or dog back into the US after traveling out of the country will require additional paperwork beginning August 1st, 2024.
This includes dogs and cats traveling by car to Canada, where a health certificate was not previously required for travel.
If you are planning to travel internationally with your pet in the next 6-12 months, now is the time to start planning!

Is your canine patient entering the United States? Soon they’ll need more than just a health certificate. Here’s what you need to know.

Have you heard? Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, can cause serious illness in dogs. This includes gastrointestinal signs (vomiting and diarrhea) and neurologic signs. Onset can be rapid, as soon as an hour after swimming in affected water.
Being informed of local cyanobacteria warnings is important, and Mascoma Lake has already been affected this summer. This warning has just been lifted, but vigilance is important.

Linked below is a map of alerts in both Vermont and New Hampshire (Thanks to Daybreak UV for the resources!)

The Cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae) Tracker allows the public to check recent cyanobacteria bloom reports at shoreline sites and recreational swimming areas of Lake Champlain and various inland lakes in Vermont.

We've been seeing a large seasonal uptick in porcupine encounters with dogs in the past few weeks!
Although nocturnal, porcupines can be seen out foraging during the day. They are very slow moving, and as such aren't able to outrun a dog.
If your dog is quilled, do not try to remove the quills at home. Often, there are additional quills (especially in the mouth) that can't be seen without sedation. Removing quills is painful to the dog and can result in a person being inadvertently bitten.
It's a good time of year for dogs to be on a leash in the woods to help keep everyone safe!
