Importance of caudal support easily shown here. As a farrier, shoeing a 17+ hand TB can be a nightmare at times. Sticking with and trusting the process is so important, both as a farrier or horse owner. Caudal aspect failure of this guy, shown on the left - with the dropped hairline and lack of heel height. This horse was known to have sensitivity and soundness issues. After a soft tissue injury, we applied size 3 Eggbars along with 3D frog support pads. On the right, just two shoeings later, a great improvement is shown in caudal function and heel height. Caudal stimulation, creating a healthy digital cushion. A casting was applied to help prevent shoe pulling but has not been needed lately. Horse is sound and moving great! These transformations make the job so rewarding (and exciting!) 🙂

Reintroducing the heart bar didn’t happen overnight, Texas farrier Blane Chapman says. It took trial and error before Burney Chapman and Dr. George Platt were successful. Eventually, educating farriers and veterinarians paid off. Technological advances enabled several techniques to achieve the effects of the heart bar.

Great time attending the International Hoof Care Summit. Pictures aren’t enough to describe the experience. So much learning from some great Farriers and clinicians. Also, such a pleasure working the trade show representing Kawell USA with some great partners and friends. Lastly, grateful to be invited to the Hall of fame dinner with Esco Buff. Until next year. I’ve been working on this horse for a few years now. He’s a fjord who has been barefoot most of his life. While barefoot he had trouble maintaining sole depth and overall hoof length. After coming up sore we decided it was time for some front shoes for some elevation and protection.

It didn’t take long to notice how weak and brittle his hoof wall was. The ongoing battle of seedy hoof causing crushed walls, chips, cracks and loose shoes led to the constant application of hoof dressing, thrush treatments, antibacterial ointments and clay under shoes and on the hoof throughout each cycle. After roughly a year of doing this we still had little luck getting ahead of the chronic problem.

With a chronic seedy toe and hoof issue I decided to apply a copper alloy shoe made by Kawell. These shoes being made of over 80% copper. Therefore being antibacterial and anti fungal. This will have a positive affect on the the hoof killing 99.9% of bacteria on contact throughout the whole shoeing cycle. Also the shoe while being worn will have some natural oxidation producing copper salts which will leach further into the hoof wall and promote a stronger healthier hoof. As a horse owner it can’t get any easier to treat bacterial hoof wall issues. Once the shoe is applied it starts working with no extra work required. Excited to see the outcome after just one shoeing. Pictures on our progress will be uploaded in a few weeks. Thank you Kawell USA for this amazing product.
