Why is Rockne smiling??

This handsome man is a 7 year old pittie mix. He recently came to see us because he wasn't eating well and seemed more lethargic than usual. His mom also noticed a pot-bellied appearance. We took x-rays of his abdomen which confirmed our suspicions.

Rockne had a large splenic tumor. The spleen is responsible for filtering blood and helping fight infection. Sometimes, the spleen will form a tumor. About 70% of the time these tumors are cancerous. Additionally, they are often ticking time-bombs for risk of rupture. If this happens, internal bleeding can quickly lead to shock.

We had a serious conversation about his options but agreed, he needed surgery to remove the giant spleen. We discussed risks and offered transfer to a larger specialty facility but his mom decided she wanted him to stay with us.

Dr. Carr spent nearly two hours working to carefully remove his fragile basketball-sized spleen. It truly took a village that day to ensure Rockne made it through surgery successfully. Our staff is absolutely incredible and their dedication shows in caring for our patients.

Rockne received good news this week... his tumor was BENIGN. No cancer!! His mom said he has more energy now than he's had in weeks. His tail didn't stop wagging, even during staple removal today.

We cannot stress the importance of having an adequate carrier for all cat patients being seen for appointments at our clinic!! 🐈 Likewise, all dogs should have collars or harnesses that fit snug and appropriately.

This morning, amid flash flooding and rising river levels throughout our area, a cat patient on his way into the building escaped a disposable/damaged cardboard carrier meant for temporary use. The cat ran around our parking lot before heading towards the railroad tracks and Susquehanna River behind our building. Several attempts to catch the cat were unsuccessful as the ground was very wet, sloped, and slippery. The cat then jumped into a very deep tributary with near freezing water adjacent to the river and was unable to scale the bank. Cameron, one of our incredible technicians, jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the cat. At one point he became fully submerged and was unable to reach the bottom. He managed to reach the cat and hold him above water while he got them both to safety.

Those who know Cameron could appreciate the striking resemblance to Captain Jack Sparrow during this morning's heroic river rescue.

New puppy owners often ask us recommendations for toys or bones to keep their new shark-teeth chewers occupied. The general rule of thumb is to avoid hard bones such as real beef or pork bones as well as antlers for risk of fractured teeth. Kong has been around over 4 decades and also allows dog owners to add treats or peanut butter (even frozen) inside to keep dog's busy.

Enjoy this unique story about how the popular Kong came to be!

🐾 The amazing story behind the invention of the Kong toy begins with a devoted dog owner named Joe Markham. Over 40 years ago, Joe was faced with a challenge - his beloved German Shepherd named Fritz had a habit of biting on rocks and sticks, which had caused serious damage to his teeth. Determined to find a solution, Joe embarked on a mission to create a toy that would keep Fritz entertained and prevent him from damaging his teeth further.

One day, while working on his vehicle, Joe accidentally dropped an axle stop with an attached bracket on the ground. To his surprise, Fritz immediately grabbed hold of it and started playing with it joyfully. Seeing his dog's excitement, Joe couldn't help but be amused by the unexpected turn of events. He turned to his friend and proudly asked, "What do you think of my new dog toy?"

His friend, though not too impressed by its appearance, humorously remarked, "Actually, it's not too pretty. It looks like an earplug from King Kong." Little did they know, those words would mark the birth of the iconic Kong toy that we know today.

And so, thanks to Joe's creative thinking and his furry friend's enthusiasm, the Kong toy came into existence. It has since become a beloved and trusted companion for countless dogs, providing them with hours of entertainment and promoting healthy dental habits.
