Cord
2013 -2024

My first dog impulse facebook purchase! When I saw those freckles he was mine..he is out of Anita Pratt’s good farm bitch Martha sired by Don Helsley’s Wizard. Cord was always a quiet unassuming dog that kept to himself.
His favorite past time off the sheep was pulling weeds.. it was a weird obsession I couldn’t fix. When I started him on sheep, he lacked confidence and power, but something inside said keep going, he will be a winner. During his training I made him Superman. He needed and ego and an ego he got! He was always a tremendous correct outrunner, the kind that doesn’t need to see the sheep to get there. He was a no stop on top kinda guy well, because sheep could figure him out quick if I let them. He was a if you can’t stop them steer them kinda dog on the drive, good pace good driver, just couldn’t chance having to lift the western ewes.

He was always humble and kind in life, and humbled me a time or two on the field. If I let my competitive edge get the best of me, well there were times I walked up the field. I learned to feather the sheep into the lines into the gates as hard flanks to the head were an absolute trap for cord vs western ewes. He had a heart the size of Texas, and moved all those big tough sheep because I asked him to, not because he was courageous or powerful, in fact he lacked both.

He was a consistent trial winner in open, and 4 points off the final go at Meeker; putting down a nice solid go at the semi final round.

He’s was petrified of gun fire and thunder but at meeker at that pen he kept working. He was scared, but I told him I got ya, just stay put and I’ll work these sheep. I filled in where he lacked.

He was always a friend to most every dog, and a foe to puppies. He wasn’t interested in their antics as he always took life very serious. I used him everyday of his life up until 3 years ago as my main farm and lesson dog. He was a favorite of mine. He suffered a back injury shortly after we had moved here, he did recover but the stroke he had changed him.

Last year he was diagnosed with a 6/6 heart murmur that gave him a very limited chance. We did all the heroics until finally his heart was broken.

My heart is now broken and his is mended. Cord was one in a million and I forever grateful to have a partnership with him like we had; he was a true friend.

He will always be hamster or handsome or hanthy to us.. or worm to his auntie Amy.. but in the end just a good good boy.

You gotta love like there’s no such thing as a broken heart; and love we did.

That’ll do my distinguished friend.. you were one on a kind and still had a lot of life to give.

Buy from a breeder

Always so cliche for people to say “I have a rescue”, well good for you. If you want a dog for a purpose buy from a breeder. If you want a dog for a dog then take your chances.

I have honestly never understood someone going to a rescue (breed rescue) and saying I need the best goat herder you have.. sure ..

As trainers we hear that and think oh for f**k sake here come another neurotic, non disciplined dog.. doesn’t matter what breed. You don’t go to the glue factory to buy your best performance horse.. do you?

This is a story about Mae, a mismanaged, mis understood dog that rescue got wrong. Mae is a lovely girl dog with beautiful bountiful fur who can present herself as a charmer. Mae came to me to be trained for goats from a family in Alabama. The owner of the dog was not honest with me about most if not all her behavioral issues.
- [ ] She bites people
- [ ] She chased horses
- [ ] She jumps fences
- [ ] She mauls livestock
These are just a few characteristics of this lovely looking dog. After 3 weeks with this dog (a living hell) I washed her out of the program.

The more she was worked, the more psycho she became. Getting to my sheep was her only intention, and it didn’t matter if I was present or not. The poor owner was at a loss for what to do. She was a 46 pound liability.. nothing less, and nothing short of a loaded weapon with no safety.

How did rescue go so wrong? Why do we have the mentality of we must save them all, and furthermore why wouldn’t rescue take her back? Rescue was basically saying “sorry about your bad luck” what the f**k? There is probably not a vet out there that would put her down either, which is another problem people can face. “She looks perfectly normal”

The sending back option was a difficult one, the situation would be the same, maybe a little worse. With rescue refusing, shelters are full, vets don’t believe in culling.., the situation was more than dire.

I reached out to a cattle rancher in the area, he said timing was perfect, he was down 1 dog. I gave him the rundown of all the things, he said ehhhh I’ll just work the p**s out of her.. and she can stay in my trailer for a bit. The horses won’t put up with her s**t, so not to worry I’ll come tonight.

And he did, Mae loved him.. she loaded up in his dog box like she was going on to live her best life.. which I hope she does. I hope she learns to make better choices in life than she has so far.

I felt I needed to have a hand in what happened to her, regardless of it being my responsibility.

Rescue operations need to do better, and hobby farmers need to try harder and not expect the trainer to resolve issues that are way beyond our scope.

Here’s to the cattleman that was willing to give her a chance .. I hope this has a good ending.

When I flew to California last November to my dear friends place, I had gone to pick up a cute female freckled pup named Scarlett. After spending the day training dogs, we went to the puppy yard. Yes Scarlett was cute, but as I sat on the ground a bounding with the puppies, I kept saying who’s that one. “Oh that’s badger” I said he’s who I want, forget gender, he speaks to me. She was like take them both, I said no, I’ll just take him. We had many adventures, dusky and I flew, layovers, grandmas house flat rabbit his toy he coveted forever.. badger would be my friend, whom I call Dusk. I have a connection with him, maybe it was me flying with a puppy for the first time ever, he was perfect, I was so worried.. he’s like we got this. Now he’s training, no matter where what the sheep are doing, he’s like “I got this” .. you couldn’t pry this big guy from my hands. My dad still thinks his name is Dust.. ok that’s close!

Stay hard, keep at it.. no one said this journey was easy.
