All farm animals are not the same! I’ve been seeing a Post making the rounds on Facebook in regards to a situation where a horse farm was completely devastated by the accidental inclusion of a cattle supplement in their horse feed. Rumensin is an ionophore used in cattle to reduce parasites and increase gain - it is an immensely important compound in their feed. Rumensin/ionophores are extremely toxic to horses - they cause severe heart damage/death. Please avoid using cattle feed in horses.

The website for Beutler and Son proudly displays 'since 1929,' meaning that this year would be 95 years in the business of stock contracting. The year of 2024

West Nile and Eastern Encephalitis have both been diagnosed in the past 2 weeks (the EEE case was in VanBuren county). Please be sure your horses are up to date on vaccines and use mosquito repellent for yourselves as these viruses are zoonotic and can affect people too.

Today, we reported the first case of West Nile virus for 2024 in a domestic animal, an Eaton County c**t not vaccinated against the disease. This highlights the importance for Michiganders to protect their animals and themselves from mosquito bites. Read more: https://bit.ly/3yuT74g

The boxes are packed and ready to go! It’s time to say goodbye to our 240 sq ft “closet office” with no temperature control, no bathroom, crappy internet and no room👋 it’s been an efficient space if nothing else!
Thank you to our doctors and support staff for tolerating this space (or lack thereof) and all its inadequacies, it was never imagined to be what it became, but you made it happen!
Thank you to our clients who have always recognized that caring, good medicine is not necessarily defined by a building, but by the people who are in it❤️
We will start seeing in-office appointments at the new office next week!! 11933 Doster Rd. Plainwell

Update photo! We’re making great progress - almost all the painting is done, well over half the building has new ceiling tile and lighting. The last major job is the flooring - if anyone out there has any experience with epoxy I’d love to chat with you.
Huge shout out to my husband - he has been working tirelessly to make this become reality in pretty quick timing considering he has to work too! This little “Stoney” wall was definitely a labor of love that he did for me❤️
We are hoping to start transitioning over next week possibly! We will 💯 keep you updated on when we are moved in.

We’ve been hearing lots of excitement about our upcoming move…and a lot of questions, so here’s a couple answers!
Q: When are you opening?
A: We have not set a firm date yet. The goal is August sometime, but we don’t know how long updates will take so we don’t want to put an timeline on it. We will for sure announce ahead of time when we’ll be moving
Q: Will you be doing small animal surgery?
A: Not right away. I would expect in the future we will do routine procedures (spay, neuter, tumor removal, etc)
Q: Will you be open full time for small animals?
A: We will continue to be a large-animal focused practice. The immediate plan is to have small animal by appointment only similar to what we do now. As need and veterinarian availability changes, we will be open to adding more hours.
Q: Will you have large animal haul-in at the new facility?
A: Immediately it will be limited to sheep/goats. We do have a heated garage that we’d like to put a set of stocks in for horses in the near future. We intend to put a trailer turn around to the north of the building.
Q: Will you be doing small animal emergencies?
A: No and unlikely to change.

Here are a couple before/mid painting pics of the reception area, exam rooms and hallway. Painting progress is being made! Up next is floors!

Emergencies!
If you have a large animal emergency

Do: call the office (269)569-2400, the message will have the number of the on call veterinarian.

Don't: text the office number, email or FB message

Don't: call/text a vet that is not on call. Many have our vet's numbers, please respect their personal lives and do not call them if they are not on call.

We will do emergency calls for clients with bovine, equine, and small livestock. We do not have the facilities to handle small animal emergencies.

Dr. Alyssa Connolly is putting on a vet camp for high school aged kids in Brighton,MI. This would be a great opportunity for teens considering vet med as a career! I can vouch for her that she’s awesome - we went to vet school together 🤓

Drum roll 🥁 🥁🥁
Introducing the future home of Stoney Hills Veterinary Service!!!!
We have been busting at the seams and the opportunity to restore this building to be a vet clinic once again came at just the right time! Our hope is to take the next month or so to do some updates and transition our operations over in August! We’ll share some inside photos as we work on things.

Health Certificates!

It’s the time of year that people are traveling, so let’s talk health certificates.

-When do I need one? Anytime you are crossing state lines.

-Why do I need one? It is a law.

-What do I need to do to get one? Contact us (call/text/email)! We request 2 weeks notice for all certificates, less than that will result in a rush fee.

-Keep reading for more info on what we need from you:

1. Date of departure

2. Destination. Name and full address (including zip code)

3. If you are using a shipper we need name and phone number.

3. Purpose - Show, Pleasure, Sale etc

4. Name/RFID/tag number of animal.
-for horses, name must match name on coggins. Also need body temperature.

5. If you are going to an event please check if they have requirements for vaccines, testing, or statements on the certificate. We will check the state requirements but event requirements are up to you.

6. For non-equine, with enough notice we can check for what is required for the state you are traveling to.

7. If your horse’s coggins was drawn by another vet we will need a clear picture of the coggins.

8. If you are going out of the country, we will need at least 2 weeks. More is better. Contact us as we need a whole lot of info!

Thanks for reading the long post and happy travels!

As the holidays and summer riding season are here, please remember to check your emergency meds supply. It's the worst feeling to be hours from home with a horse that doesn't feel well, no vet service, maybe no cell service. Having a few essential items can make such a difference. Also check expiration dates!! If you need to restock give us a call!

We are seeing more and more hobby-farm and 4-H starter calves. Many people don’t realize how sensitive these youngsters are when it comes to diet. The number one thing I’ve seen as a cause of diarrhea this spring has been inappropriate feeding.
- calves need milk fat and protein. Their digestive system cannot handle plant fibers until the rumen starts to develop when they’re over a month old. Some milk replacers are built on a soy basis - you can get adequate % fat and protein, but it’s not digested and the calf will essentially starve due to lack of nutrients. See the 2 milk replacers below- if you have soy or plant proteins anywhere high in the ingredients list, steer clear.
- if you’re using a lower fat:protein milk replacer and want to “bump it up” you can only do slightly more powder. Too concentrated (higher total solids) will cause them to scour.
- 2 quarts 20:20 milk replacer twice a day is the bare minimum and your end product will reflect that.
If you are looking to start a calf project we’d love to help you and hopefully prevent issues through education🐄

For those who notice these things: Starting May 1st if you pay with a credit card it will show up on your statement as NVS Vet Partners or Heritage Vet Partners. We are part of a national partnership of large animal veterinarians and this is who we are processing through to keep fees minimal:)

Dr. Shawn Dolan is more than a local colleague, she’s been a close friend since I was 13 years old and she was the cool big sister of my best friend. Then we spent a couple years together at Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine. She moved down the road and we were country neighbors! We’ve bounced ideas and cases off each other over the years and when it was time for Dr. Dolan to close her traditional equine practice, we were fortunate to meet and now service many of her clients. Now we can all come alongside her and help her like she has helped so many of us❤️ Please consider attending this event or donating to help with medical bills.

Change #3
Our office recently got a little facelift!! We tore out those nasty old floors - we never dreamed the amount of traffic our tiny office would see!! We have new rubber floors which will be so much nicer for the dogs who don't like slippery floors and easy to clean. We also modified our storage area to make room for a proper exam table.
