We are sharing this update on behalf of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Biologists with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) confirmed security camera footage of a mountain lion in Plano on Friday, November 8. TPWD recently confirmed mountain lion sightings in Lake Dallas on October 27 and Frisco on November 1. All sightings have been recorded at night and no interactions with people or pets have been documented. It is likely that this mountain lion was just passing through and will not stay in the area for an extended period of time. Residents are asked to please report any additional mountain lion sightings to TPWD DFW Urban Wildlife Biologist, Rachel Richter, at [email protected].

Encounters with urban wildlife in Plano are rare. Learn more at Plano.gov/Wildlife.

Notice: Bat Found in Plano Tests Positive for Rabies

A bat found in Plano has tested positive for rabies. The bat was picked up on October 24 near the entrance of the Campisiโ€™s restaurant at 8100 Dallas Pkwy. While there was no known contact with people or pets, the bat was sent off for testing due to it being found in an area with high public traffic.

Rabies is a preventable viral disease that occurs in warm-blooded animals and can be contracted by humans through bites from infected animals. โ€œThis positive test highlights the importance of keeping all vaccinations current โ€“ especially rabies โ€“ since there is no way to predict when a pet may come into contact with a wild animal,โ€ said Jamey Cantrell, Animal Services Director. The State of Texas and Plano City ordinances require that animals receive rabies inoculation and subsequent booster shots.

The Plano Animal Shelter does not routinely test wild animals unless they have had contact with a person or pet and are one of five high-risk non-domestic animals: bats, foxes, skunks, coyotes, and raccoons.

Anyone who thinks they or their pets may have come into contact with this bat is encouraged to call Animal Services at (972) 769-4360 to report their interactions.
