I refuse to get excited because Iā€™ve seen exactly zero interest from the male, but the female kopsteini is growing 8 huge follicles. Now Iā€™m just praying the male got the job done while I wasnā€™t looking!

Switching out the filter for the rufusocularaā€™s fishing pond and found this friend. Iā€™d added more vampire crabs in November but hadnā€™t seen them since. I wasnā€™t sure if it was because they didnā€™t make it or because the setup is quite overgrown. Glad to know at least one is doing well - heā€™s about twice the size as he was the last time I saw him.

Sorry for the pic quality. Itā€™s a screenshot of a zoomed in video since apparently I canā€™t post a video and a picture anymore šŸ™„

Some enclosure maintenance today and caught this freeloader trying to sneak into one of the enclosures with the new topsoil. I know free room and board sounds great, but the Thrasops jacksonii roommate wouldā€™ve ruined his day.

Xenodermus update - just as a reminder there were three eggs:
Egg #1 (78-79F) - Died midway through incubation.
Egg #3 (72F) - Pipped on day 70. I noticed a small kink a few days after hatchling. It went blue, but had a very strange shed and unfortunately died shortly after.

Now for the good news
Egg #2 (75-76F, pip day 59) - He had his third perfect shed last night and seems to be doing great. We are assist feeding fish at the moment (tadpole supply issue) but other than that he is a perfect little dragon!

While its always a bummer to lose animals, I've learned a lot from this experience. If I ever get the chance to try again its 75-76F all the way.

Xenodermus update

Egg #1 (78-79F) - The egg that didn't make it.

Egg #2 (75-76F, pip day 59) The hatchling had her first shed. She's active, alert and I swear has already gotten bigger.

Egg #3 (72F) - We have a nose! Today is day 70.
Last night I manually pipped the last egg. The longer incubation wasn't surprising because of the lowers temps, but I was keeping an especially close eye on both eggs near the end of incubation. The few other people who have incubated Xenodermus reported almost all of their fertile eggs developed normally only to die fully formed right before hatching or pip and die a few hours later. Last night I noticed multiple small, broken blood vessels and so I made the call. I was able to see a bit of movement so I crossed my fingers and left him alone. By this morning the hatchling had made its own slit (obviously my offering was inferior) and took multiple breaths while I was watching. I'm not sure if my disturbance jump started the process or the blood vessels breaking were already the first signs of hatching. Either way Ill be holding my breath for the next day or two for a second, healthy baby.

Life with flying snakes. This lovely lady ripped the reptilink off the tongs and leapt for freedom. I chased her around the room (she never let go of the link) before cornering her under the Drymobius enclosure. Now she gets a cobweb covered reptilink and itā€™s her own fault šŸ¤£

PS: No, the cobwebs wonā€™t hurt her. Sheā€™s fine.

PSS: Alright, if youā€™re that concerned YOU try to get it back from her šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

More details on the Xenodermus clutch. I had just returned from an export out of Miami last night, so I really only had time to notice the pip, get over excited and then immediately pass out. Here is the backstory:

Late June a group of Xenodermus were imported and one was suspected to be gravid. A couple weeks later I was able to see them first hand, confirm she was carrying and take her home. She laid three fertile eggs on July 9th. What instances I could find of incubating Xenodermus eggs recommended 78-79F with babies pipping between days 60-65. They also talked about fully developed hatchlings dead in egg or failing to thrive over the following weeks. The incubation temperature seemed high to me and I wondered if a cooler bake for a longer duration would result in stronger hatchlings. I ran a little experiment and ended up splitting the clutch and trying three different temperatures

Egg #1 - 78-79F, incubator (textbook)
Egg #2 - 75-76F, shelf in climate controlled room
Egg #3 - 72F, shelf in climate controlled room

All the eggs developed strong veins and looked perfect for the first month. Suddenly #1 started to crash. Small veins burst and it started to collapse in on itself. A few days later it molded away to almost nothing. I still have it in the incubator because I've had some surprises before, but no signs of life.

Eggs #2 and #3 were still going strong but I kept an eye on them. Last night was day 59 and the pip was from Egg #2. Earlier than I expected from the cooler run, but I was over the moon seeing that little nose. This morning she was out and ready to go. At a quick glance she looks perfect (the bit of umbilicus will drop off on its own). I'm mostly leaving her alone until her first shed but I had to get at least one good pic.

Everything is still quite from egg #3, so the wait continues....

This is easily one of the top reptile moments in my life. CH Xenodermus javanicus (Dragon Snake)

The joys of living in Florida! Idalia should hit well north of me, but I will still very likely be without power. I have terrible reception where I am so please be patient with extended response times over the next few days.

If you have questions about the Europe export, please contact Ashley Dezan at Northern Lights Reptile Imports until Iā€™m back online.

My mycterizans has the most flexible mouth of all the Ahaetulla species Iā€™ve worked with. When feeding it really rolls itā€™s lips out and the bottom jaw goes from a V to a square shape (check out pic 2). I need to get better pics, but in person itā€™s extremely noticeable compared to any of the other vines in the house.

Sorry for the quality. Only had my phone and really had to zoom to get these.
